Dear Mr. Steinbrenner: First of all, I know you and the entire Yankee organization are upset and disappointed over the team's early exit in the ALDS. With that said, I still would like to thank you for another great season. As a diehard fan---and a paying customer---I appreciate the effort everyone in the "Yankee Universe" did in giving us another Eastern Division title and a 97-win season. No Yankee fan should ever take for granted a 97-win season and a divisional championship. I'm writing to you today, to ask that you, and everyone else in the "Yankee Universe", take a deep breath and just take a step back to digest what just happened before "heads start to roll". In my book, "knee-jerk" reactions never work out. The ALDS loss to the Tigers was one of my biggest disappointments in my 39-year tenure as a Yankee fan. I compared this defeat to the one that we suffered in 1995 when we lost to the Mariners. In short, Saturday night I was disappointed, depressed, and very frustrated. All along, I thought this Yankee team had enough to get to the world series. It just didn't happen. On Sunday, the disappointment was still entrenched in me, but suddenly took a back seat when I read you were thinking about firing Joe Torre. As a long-time fan, I ask you to please take a few days to think about what you are going to do in terms of Joe Torre. Throughout this season, baseball writers--including those who are now calling for Torre's firing--acknowledged this was Joe's best managerial job in his tenure with the Yankees. Torre was able to keep the team afloat despite losing Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield for most of the season. The Yankee manager also had to navigate a pitching staff that was "so-so" all season long. Finally, with all this, Joe did his usual great job in handling the press, and defusing distractions that could hurt this team. Yes, Lou Piniella would be a "sexy" hiring right now. Heck, he was one of my favorite players in the 70'S and he was an exciting manager. That said, you must realize this is a different situation than the last time "Sweet Lou" managed here. Back in 1986 and 1987 there wasn't the unbearable pressure put on the Yankees of having to win the world series every year. If Torre is fired and Piniella takes over, I wonder how Lou will handle the scrutiny if the Yanks get off to a slow start next year. Unlike Torre, Lou is very fiery, and when the press and fans start squawking after a 4-game losing streak in April, I wonder how Piniella will handle it. We already know how Joe was able to handle it, and his record speaks for itself. Consider this, the Yankees just won a division with 97 wins, and many are calling for the manager's job. This after winning the division for the ninth straight year. The pressure on Piniella will be enormous. Even if he matches what Torre did this year, he would still have to win it all to be a "success". The last thing this team needs right now is more pressure. This is why I hope you and the rest of the Yankee brain trust really think this out, and don't make a move in anger. All you have to do is think back to 1980 when Howser was fired after losing in the ALCS, despite guiding the team to 103 wins. That firing didn't help the team at all. As the owner of this team, you have the right to call all the shots. Torre has had quite a run here, and if you feel a change will be beneficial, then make it. However, if you are making the move because the Yankees didn't hit against the Tigers, you are making the move for the wrong reason. Joe Torre has one more year left on his contract. I think he's earned the right to complete the final year of it. Please, just take a step back, and consider what a great job this man did this year. As a fan, all I can ask is, that whatever your decision, you just give it some thought. Don't make the same mistake you made in 1980. Again, thanks for another great season, Louis DiLullo 資料來源: http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=ml-yankees&msg=254727.1&ctx=0 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.34.183.63
