New era begins as Damon takes charge in center field

NEW YORK -- For the past 13 years, Bernie Williams has patrolled center field
for the Yankees. From the dim days of the early 1990s through the
championship era of 1996-2000 and beyond, Williams' presence in center field
has been a constant for the Bombers.

Damon, who spent the last four years playing for the rival Red Sox, signed a
four-year, $52 million deal with the Yankees this winter to take over
Williams' spot in center. Although he will have big shoes to fill, Damon has
the experience in Boston over the past four years to be an ideal replacement.

Damon gives the Yankees a true leadoff hitter, enabling Torre to drop Derek
Jeter back to his customary No. 2 spot in the batting order. Damon's
stolen-base production has dropped in the past two years, as he swiped a
total of 37 bags, but the Red Sox generally don't encourage their players to
run often.

Torre, on the other hand, will give Damon a green light on the basepaths,

Matsui returns to the Bronx with a new contract, signing the same four-year,
$52 million deal that the team gave Damon.

In his first three years in the Majors, Matsui averaged 23 home runs and 110
RBIs, and his average has improved every year, including last season, when he
hit .305. His 45 doubles also tied him for third most in the American League.

the field every day. Since joining New York for the 2003 season, Matsui has
played in all 487 of the team's regular-season games, as well as all 33 po

1,787 consecutive regular-season games.

hoped for in his first two years, hitting .290 with 70 home runs and 244 RBIs.

The fact that Sheffield is playing for what should be the final contract of
his career would appear to be motivation for the veteran, though his desire

Backing up all three outfielders will be Bubba Crosby, who looked to be the
Yankees' choice to start in center before Damon signed.

Crosby has split time between the Yankees and Triple-A Columbus in each of
the past two years, but the 29-year-old has no Minor League options remaining,
so he should stick with the team for the entire season.

Crosby gives the Yankees a solid glove in the outfield, as well as a
pinch-runner off the bench. Should any of the three starting outfielders land
on the disabled list, Crosby would be the front-runner to replace them on an
interim basis.
