Williams, Giambi likely to split time as Yanks' designated hitter

The following is the last in a series of weekly stories on MLB.com examining
each Major League club, position-by-position. The past seven Wednesdays,

TAMPA, Fla. -- For some teams in the American League, the designated hitter
spot is reserved for a big-time power hitter, a lethal bat in the middle of
the lineup to instill fear in opposing pitchers.

The Yankees don't have a bat of that caliber in the DH spot, one to match up

Bernie Williams, whose last great season came in 2002, figures to see more
than half of the at-bats at the DH spot, as the 37-year-old center fielder
signed a one-year deal with the Yankees -- the only team he's ever played for
-- to remain in pinstripes for a 16th season.

the strain of playing the field, the team is hoping that the switch-hitter can
provide some production.

itself will dictate how much playing time becomes available."

When Williams isn't the DH, chances are Jason Giambi will be. The plan is for
Giambi to play most of his games at first base, where he historically posts
his best numbers. But he has had his share of health issues as well, so Joe
Torre will surely try to get the 35-year-old some "days off" as the DH.

Phillips played sparingly during his time with the Yankees last season,
hitting .150 in just 40 at-bats. But in 75 games with Triple-A Columbus,

season at that level.

Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui are two other veterans who could see an
occasional game at DH, giving them a chance to rest their legs with a day off

When Torre rests any of his outfielders, Bubba Crosby will be the man to step
in. Crosby is the only true backup outfielder on the roster, capable of
playing all three positions.

Crosby looked to be the front-runner to succeed Williams as the starting
center fielder, but when the Yankees inked Johnny Damon to a four-year deal,

primary pinch-runner for the Yankees, who feature some slow-footed vets such

Flaherty as Posada's backup behind the plate.

Last season, Cairo started 82 games at second for the Mets, as well as six at

Stinnett hit .248 with six home runs and 12 RBIs in 59 games with Arizona

and Royals, the catcher is a .239 hitter with 63 homers and 216 RBIs.
