All three Yankees outfield spots manned by solid veterans

NEW YORK -- The Yankees have rolled their outfield forward from the 2006
postseason with the same three veterans set to patrol for fly balls in 2007.

From left to right field, Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon and Bobby Abreu are
projected to return as starters when the club begins its pursuit of the
franchise's 27th World Series title.

The group is centered by the 33-year-old Damon, who will look to follow up on

Playing 131 of his 149 games in center field, Damon proved to be a worthy

Damon finished the season tied for third in the American League with 115 runs
scored and tied for ninth with 25 stolen bases, even as he played through much
of the '06 campaign with nagging injuries.

Earning points in the clubhouse for his grit, Damon avoided the disabled list,
working through a broken sesamoid bone in his right foot that caused lower

his throwing, but he said in a December conference call that all his ailments
are expected to be cleared for the spring.

complete season after losing him for four months due to a fractured left

After joining the Yankees in 2003, Matsui had played in all 518 games (and
1,768 consecutive contests, including games played for the Yomiuri Giants in

hit by Boston's Mark Loretta, landing awkwardly on his arm.

It marked the first season with the Yankees that Matsui could not post

the Yankees' American League Division Series against the Detroit Tigers.

regarding the outfield situation, but a roster spot and the promise of
significant playing time are both questionable for '07.
