Popping flashbulbs blazed Jeter's path from the on-deck circle to home plate, a
s if he were a leading man at a red-carpet premiere. The Yankees were down by t
hree runs, and the fans were up on their feet cheering. It was Jeter the fans c
ame to see, and he would not disappoint them.
在Jeter繞場一周跑回本壘時，鎂光燈此起彼落，他看來似乎是一位初踏上紅地毯的新人。
此時洋基落後3分，而球迷歡欣鼓舞；那就是球迷想要看到的，而Jeter也沒讓他們失望。

He hit a dribbler, the ball traveling three feet but proving to be such a big h
it that a rain delay in the ninth inning could not dampen the crowd's spirits,
nor could the fact that the Washington Generals of major-league baseball were l
eading the Yankees by 7-5 at the time of the delay.
他擊出一個反彈球，儘管球只飛了三呎遠，但已證明這是一次很棒的打擊；即使因雨延賽
的第九局，而這時大聯盟的Washington Generals仍以7比5領先洋基，都無法澆熄球迷的熱
情。(誰可以跟我說一下Washington Generals是啥嗎？我查了一下怎麼是打籃球的？@@a)
這一段好難翻，我很可能根本就翻錯了...

Jeter's reaction to his accomplishment was nonchalant. He doffed his batting he
lmet to acknowledge the fans, who were chanting his name. And then he took a le
ad at second. His muted reaction was predictable. Indeed, Yankees Manager Joe T
orre called it before the game.
Jeter對於他的成就，反應很冷淡。球迷大聲呼喊Jeter的名字，他脫掉打擊頭盔向他們致
意。And then he took a lead at second這句翻不出來，然後他重新站上二壘？@@a
他沉默的反應是可以被預期的，事實上，總教練Torre在賽前就說過了。

The shield was firmly in place when Jeter was asked about the prospect of reach
ing 3,000 hits. "That is a long, long, long ways away," he said. 
當Jeter被問到3000安的期望時，「那是一條好長、好長的路。」他說。
(The shield was firmly in place這句話翻不出來，是說這壓力顯得更大嗎？)

 thing.  是說不把這事(指Jeter2000安)看的很重要是很殘酷的嗎？
