Yankees notes: Jeter not dismayed as streak ends at 25 Monday, September 18, 2006 BY BRIDGET WENTWORTH Star-Ledger Staff from nj.com NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter's career-high hitting streak came to an end at 25 games last night when the captain went 0-for-4 in the Yankees' 5-4 loss to the Red Sox in the second game of the day/night doubleheader. Jeter, who got the day game off, would have had a fifth chance at the plate in the ninth inning had Melky Cabrera been able to get on base. But Cabrera flied out to left field to end the game. "You're thinking of the fairy tale, you hope he gets the chance to hit in the ninth, do something about (the situation)," manager Joe Torre said. "It's probably easier it's over with." Jeter was totally unaffected by the end of the streak. "It was one of those things, it just didn't happen," he said. "It was not my day to get a hit." Asked if the end of the streak could allow him to focus on the team's hunt for the American League East title, Jeter shook his head. "I was always focused on team goals," he said. "The thing is with a hitting streak, you're always trying to get a hit anyway." Cabrera startedin left field both games and played better in the afternoon. In the night game, he was 0-for-3, but in the day game, a 6-3 loss, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and made the defensive play of the game in the seventh. With the game tied 2-2, Eric Hinske hit a blooper, and Cabrera called shortstop Nick Green off and made a running, lunging grab, just catching the ball at the tip of his glove. His momentum sent him hurtling onto a small platform just in front of the first row of field-level seats and nearly into the laps of fans seated there. Torre will have to decide how to use the rookie in the postseason if both Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield are available in the outfield. "Melky will be valuable," Torre said, "whether it's going out there to pick up Matsui, or whether he plays and we do something else with Matsui. We have a lot of options. We've got to see how much Sheff is going to be involved in this whole thing." Sheffield will work out today in Toronto and possibly participate in a simulated game tomorrow. Torre saidCory Lidle, who will skip a start in Toronto tonight to let a sore finger heal, will be slotted into the bullpen at first when he is ready to return. ... Torre expects to see Carl Pavano at the end of the week when the team arrives in Tampa, Fla., for a four-game series with the Devil Rays. Pavano has been out of sight since breaking ribs in an August car accident he kept secret from the team, and is rehabilitating in Tampa. Whether he will rejoin the Yankees this season is uncertain. "As far as his chances of pitching with us, we'll know that next week," Torre said. ... Torre said Sean Henn could be the starter for a game Wednesday night in Toronto -- against Roy Halladay. Following tradition, the seven rookies on the roster were made to dress up in costume for the team's final road trip of the season. Their look? George Steinbrenner. All seven wore white turtlenecks, blue blazers, gray dress pants, silver comb-over wigs, and aviator sunglasses with gold rims. The group got together for pictures in the clubhouse as teammates gathered around, laughing, before making their way out of the Stadium. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 220.132.198.21
