Mailbag: Jeter's shot at MVP
Beat reporter Mark Feinsand answers fans' questions

What do you think of Derek Jeter's chance of winning the MVP Award this year?
It seems to me that you have to hit 30-plus home runs before you get a
mention, but defense and average don't play a huge part.

Jeter has a very good chance at winning the MVP Award, as Chicago's Jermaine
Dye and Minnesota's Justin Morneau appear to be his primary competition.

David Ortiz would have been a runaway winner if the Red Sox hadn't fallen so
far out of the race and he hadn't missed 10 days with his health scare. There
is a chance Big Papi could reemerge as a candidate if Boston can somehow get
back in the Wild Card race, though I don't see that happening.

That leaves Jeter, Dye and Morneau. The one thing the other two have over
Jeter -- besides big home run totals -- is they will be playing in tense,
postseason-like games throughout September as they battle each other for the
Wild Card spot.

Jeter and the Yankees have a big cushion over the Red Sox, so September won't
present as many dramatic moments for the captain. My problem with that is
this: Why do the Yankees have such a big lead? Shouldn't the games in April
through August count just as much in the MVP race?

Jeter helped the Yankees get through a season in which they lost Hideki
Matsui and Gary Sheffield for most of the year, suffered through a couple of

without Robinson Cano.

Jeter has been the one constant for this team, and while I may be biased
toward him for the MVP Award because I watch him every day, I think he

Yes, Cabrera is a rookie, but this year's crop of American League rookies may
be the strongest it has been in years.

Taking just the pitchers into the equation, you have Justin Verlander,
Jonathan Papelbon, Francisco Liriano and Jered Weaver, each of whom has been
very impressive.

Kenji Johjima and Nick Markakis would be strong candidates for the award in
most years, as would Cabrera, but the first-year pitching class is simply too

Looking forward into 2007, are there any free agents who the Yankees would

current roster players, and which do you think will be taken up?

I'll answer the second part of your question first: Sheffield and Mike
Mussina are the only players with club options in 2007. Sheffield's option is
for $13 million, while Mussina's is for $17 million. Options on Jorge Posada
and Mariano Rivera already have kicked in because of incentive clauses.

I don't expect the team to pick up either, though Sheffield's is the more
likely of the two. Mussina isn't a $17 million pitcher, but I think the
Yankees will bring him back for a two-year deal, possibly with an option for
2009.

As for free agents the Yankees may pursue, the starting rotation figures to
be the first priority. Randy Johnson, Chien-Ming Wang, Carl Pavano and Jaret
Wright are under contract (though Wright's deal can be bought out for $4
million if the team chooses to do so), while Mussina and Cory Lidle will be
free agents provided the Yanks don't pick up Mussina's option.

the Astros, and the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers look to be the primary suitors.

Baseball Classic. Matsuzaka is 26, posted good numbers in Japan again for the

Matsuzaka isn't a free agent, so Seibu will command a huge posting fee from
whichever big-league team wants him.
