Jeter, Beltran among Silver Sluggers New York stars among 13 first-time winners of award The influx of young, productive hitters into the Major Leagues continues to grow, and big-league managers and coaches are definitely noticing. First-time winners far outnumbered previous winners on Friday when the Louisville Slugger Company announced the 2006 Silver Slugger Award winners. Silver Slugger Awards were determined by a vote of MLB managers and coaches who selected the opposing players they felt were the best offensive producers at each position in the American and National Leagues. Selections were based on a combination of offensive statistics, including batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. While the list of winners had some carryover from 2005, including left fielder Manny Ramirez and designated hitter David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox, there were 13 first-time recipients among the 18 selections. And five of the first-timers are in their early- or mid-20s. At the top of the list was 23-year-old Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, the first catcher in AL history to win a batting title. His .347 batting average also was the best in the Major Leagues, .003 higher than Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Freddy Sanchez. First baseman Justin Morneau, 25, the other half of the Twins' "M&M Boys," also landed his first Silver Slugger Award. He finished among the league eaders in all three Triple Crown categories, batting .321, hitting 34 home runs and driving in 130 runs. The under-25 age group winners included 24-year-old New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, who batted .342, hit 15 home runs and drove in 78 runs during his second full MLB season; 23-year-old New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes (.300/19/81) and Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann, the baby of the '06 Silver Sluggers at age 22. The Braves had their streak of NL East championships end at 14 straight, but McCann had a breakout season, batting .333 with 24 home runs and 93 RBIs. While there were more young hitters than usual winning Silver Slugger Awards this season, several established veterans captured their first Silver Slugger. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, surprisingly, never won the award during his first nine-plus MLB seasons. Alex Rodriguez dominated the award for shortstops from 1998 through 2003 before passing the baton to Miguel Tejada, the winner the past two seasons. New York Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran is another first-time Silver Slugger winner. The switch-hitter was rewarded for the run production he contributed to the NL East champs. Beltran established career highs in home runs (41) and RBIs (116) while batting .275. You may have noticed that the Twins, Yankees, Red Sox and Mets each had two Silver Slugger Award winners. Well, it doesn't end there. The Chicago White Sox also had a pair of Silver Sluggers in their lineup on a daily basis in third baseman Joe Crede (.283/30/94) and right fielder Jermaine Dye (.315/44/120). Same goes for the Philadelphia Phillies -- first baseman and MLB home run king Ryan Howard (.313/58/149) and second baseman Chase Utley (.309/32/102). Other first-time winners were outfielder Matt Holliday (.326/34/114) of the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano, who hit six home runs and drove in 11 runs. Ramirez (.321/35/102) and Ortiz (.287/54/137) led the group of multiyear Silver Sluggers. Ortiz won his third award while Ramirez was selected for the eighth consecutive season and ninth overall, tying him with Barry Larkin for the third-most Silver Sluggers in history. Only Barry Bonds (12) and Mike Piazza (10) have received more since the awards began being presented annually in 1980, when four future Hall of Famers -- Reggie Jackson, Robin Yount, George Brett and Mike Schmidt -- won Silver Sluggers, along with two future managers in Dusty Baker and Willie Randolph. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim outfielder Vladimir Guerrero, who batted .329 with 33 home runs and 116 RBIs, captured his sixth Silver Slugger Award; Washington Nationals left fielder Alfonso Soriano (.277/46/95) won his fourth and Florida Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera (.339/26/114) made it back-to-back Silver Slugger seasons. He was selected as an outfielder in 2005. Though he didn't capture a Silver Slugger Award, Sanchez will receive a Silver Bat for winning the NL batting title -- as will Mauer for his AL batting championship. Players will receive their Silver Slugger Awards prior to a regular season home game in 2007. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 203.73.55.67
