UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Yankees fans still see Don Mattingly as a player. And
when the ever-popular icon walked the stage at the Mohegan Sun Convention
Center, bat in hand, he still looked as if he could turn around a 95-mph
fastball.

But fans weren't lined up for an autograph signing; they were there to listen
to him share his knowledge about fielding and hitting at the World Baseball
Coaches Convention. Mattingly, who still has the best fielding percentage
among first basemen in the history of the game (.996), captivated the
capacity crowd in a fielding session Thursday night and a hitting session
Friday evening.

It's been more than a decade since Mattingly's playing career came to an end,

The process begins next month when Mattingly moves from his role as the

National League Manager of the Year in 2006?

opinions. The bench coach is another set of eyes."

Mattingly also will work with the Yankees' new hitting instructor, Kevin Long,

for a few years and we respect each other's opinions. We've worked together
with different guys."

He would know. Mattingly was a sure-fire Hall of Famer until a chronic back
injury robbed him of his power in his final years with the Yankees and
ultimately helped cut short his career after the 1995 season - right before

Torre's postseason run.

Mattingly, who hit .307 with 2,153 hits and 222 homers in 14 seasons. "I don't
think I have the numbers. Part of it is longevity, and I wasn't able to do
that and do the things that I did early in my career."

foot at the bag and your left foot near the line.

down the line, making the throw to second or third in one motion an easier
task.

coach. If he sends the runner and the throw is on line, don't cut it. If he

5. On starting a double play: Get the throw to the shortstop as quickly as
