Cairo close to Bronx return
Report: Infielder agrees to one-year, $750,000 contract

NEW YORK -- The Yankees continue to fill their remaining needs for the 2007
season, coming together with utility infielder Miguel Cairo on a one-year
contract.
The $750,000 deal was first reported by the New York Post on Saturday and has
not been officially announced by the team. General manager Brian Cashman had
confirmed that re-signing Cairo was "a possibility" in a conference call with
reporters.

"I'm probably focused more outside the organization right now, so we'll see
where it takes me," Cashman said Friday. "Obviously, it's one of our areas of
need. I know there [are] excess first basemen who can play shortstop in a
pinch, so we'll have to obviously secure somebody that we feel can do that."

Cairo, 32, fits the bill, having played five different positions for the
Yankees in 2006, including all four infield positions. He batted .239 with no
home runs, 30 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 81 games last season, returning to
the Bronx after a one-year detour to the Mets in 2005.

Of his 57 starts for the Yankees in 2006, Cairo earned 36 nods at second base
while Robinson Cano served a disabled list stint, batting .269 with 22 RBIs
and seven stolen bases as a second baseman.

Cairo also started 10 games at shortstop, six at first base, four at third
base and one in left field. He had made little secret of his desire to return
to the Yankees, but was content to let other items play out in the team's
winter blueprint.

The role of utility infielder is one of the final pieces to come together for
the Yankees this winter, immediately following their signing of first baseman
Doug Mientkiewicz to a one-year contract on Friday.

The Yankees briefly flirted with the idea of signing Mark Loretta -- who went
to Houston instead -- before deciding upon Cairo, a lifetime .268 hitter who
has also played with Toronto, Chicago, Tampa Bay and St. Louis in a Major
League career that dates back to 1996.
