NEW MILFORD, Conn., Feb. 9 — Bernie Williams came to this Connecticut town
Friday night to play his guitar in a benefit concert at a church. He will be
back home in Westchester County in the days to come. But where he will not be
any time soon is in Tampa, Fla., where the Yankees will begin spring training
next week without their longtime center fielder.
期內不會出現的地方是Tampa(Yankees下週將在此展開春訓).
Meeting with reporters before the concert, Williams said he would not accept
the team’s current offer to come to spring training as a long shot on a
minor league contract and perhaps play himself onto the roster if another
player got hurt.
Instead, Williams said, he would maintain a waiting game of sorts by staying
home, staying in shape, spurning offers of guaranteed contracts from other
teams and waiting for the Yankees to change their minds and offer him a
guaranteed spot on the roster. He spoke in his usual calm demeanor.
“I think if they wanted me, they would have signed me already,” said
Williams, who has spent 16 seasons with the Yankees, the only team he has
played for. “The option to go to spring training and see what happened — I
don’t think at this moment it is something I want to consider.”
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, reached by telephone Friday night,
said there was no space for Williams.
Bernie.
“We love and respect Bernie, but with the dynamic of our roster, there’s
not a spot,” Cashman said. “We had a lot of conversations with him. I
understand that he doesn’t want to accept a minor league deal.”
Bernie
Williams, alternately quiet and quirky, has been a hugely popular player in
the Bronx and was a key contributor to the championships the Yankees won in
1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. Even though his skills began to slip, he proved to
be valuable member of the team in 2006, hitting .281 in 420 at-bats as he
helped fill the void created by injuries to Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui.
But that was last year. The Yankees plan to carry 12 pitchers and 2 first
baseman in 2007, not including Jason Giambi, who will become the full-time
designated hitter. That leaves the team with room for one reserve outfielder,
Melky Cabrera. And if Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu, Matsui or Cabrera are
injured this spring, Cashman appears more inclined to summon Kevin Reese or
Kevin Thompson as a replacement instead of turning to Williams.
Kevin
Thompson.
Williams seems aware of the team’s plans. “As it is right now, it doesn’t
seem like I am going to be playing with that team this year,” he said.
Still, he does not seem ready to say he has retired.
Williams said that he talked to Cashman two months ago and that Cashman told
him the team was pursuing some trades that might open a spot for Williams.
And the Yankees talked to the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates about
a three-way deal that would have sent Cabrera to the Braves, Pirates reliever
Mike Gonzalez to the Yankees and Braves first baseman Adam LaRoche to the
Pirates.
Pirates.
But that deal never materialized, with LaRoche instead being traded for
Gonzalez. Cabrera is still a Yankee and Williams is a man without a team.
“It is just a part of the game,” Williams said. “It is what makes this
interesting.”
After speaking for only a few minutes, Williams was pulled away by the concert
’s promoters. It was time to concentrate on hitting notes, not pitches, to
strum his guitar and wait for a roster spot that will probably not
materialize.
