Pavano’s Line for Yankees: Two Runs, Four Hits, No Injuries
By TYLER KEPNER
Published: March 13, 2007
FORT MYERS, Fla., March 12 — Most of the Yankees took the team bus to City
of Palms Park on Monday. The starting pitcher, Carl Pavano, made his own
arrangements. It could have been an adventure.
City of Palms Park. Carl Pavano
“I’m glad he got here — because he drove,” Manager Joe Torre said,
referring to Pavano’s famous Florida car accident last August. “I just
kiddingly went by him and said, ‘Whew, you’re here.’ ”
Until he justifies his four-year, $39.95 million contract, Pavano may remain
a human punch line. He made his first start in eight days on Monday against
the Boston Red Sox, and survived three innings with no new injuries.
Pavano’s control was sharp; of his 48 pitches, 29 were strikes. The Red Sox
had four hits and two runs, and several of their outs were smoked right at
fielders. But considering his layoff — he missed a start last Friday because
of a medical issue involving his girlfriend — Pavano was encouraged.
“I thought I pitched pretty good,” Pavano said. “I thought I had good
extension and life on the ball. I tried to establish my fastball in and out,
and I was able to get ahead of the hitters.”
They were good hitters, too. The Red Sox, who won by 7-5, fielded most of
their regular lineup: Julio Lugo, Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez,
J. D. Drew, Mike Lowell, Coco Crisp, Doug Mirabelli and Dustin Pedroia.
Julio Lugo, Kevin Youkilis
, David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, J. D. Drew, Mike Lowell, Coco Crisp, Doug
Mirabelli and Dustin Pedroia. Rex Sox
Pavano retired the first five hitters, throwing only 16 pitches. Drew made
the last out in that stretch, on a liner to center, and two singles followed
before Mirabelli hit a two-run double.
The pitching coach, Ron Guidry, told Pavano he had started to aim the ball
after Drew’s lineout, and Pavano said he pitched more aggressively after
that.
Pavano
In the third, Pavano escaped a jam by getting Drew on a called third strike
with two runners on base. Catcher Todd Pratt, who faced Pavano in his best
years with the Florida Marlins, said that Pavano could still dominate.
Pavano
“I saw some of the stuff today I saw in the past,” Pratt said. “He just
needs to get consistent. Some of the pitches to J. D. Drew and to Manny, that
’s what he was doing when I faced him in Florida. As long as he gets his arm
strength and stays healthy, Carl’s an intimidating factor. Not many people
in New York have seen that attitude out of him.”
他面對J.D.
Pavano’s attitude has often been sour, but he was clearly pleased after
leaving the game. He said he got away with a third-strike fastball in the
second inning that Ramirez took for a strike. “I was actually ducking when I
let it go,” Pavano said.
He also joked about Torre’s comment — “Me and Skip had a laugh about that”
— and said he used the long drive to clear his mind.
“I think my first pro start in the Gulf Coast League was on this field,”
said Pavano, a former Red Sox prospect. “Driving to the field, in this
city, brought back some memories for me.”
Red Sox
Pavano was so highly regarded that the Red Sox obtained Pedro Martinez from
Montreal by trading Pavano and Tony Armas Jr. there in 1997. Pavano came into
his own after another trade, to the Marlins, but his reputation has suffered
in New York.
Montreal
Injuries to his shoulder, back, buttocks, elbow and ribs have sidelined
Pavano since June 27, 2005, and teammates have openly questioned his
competitiveness. Pavano acknowledged that his hobbies had changed as he has
tried to stay healthy.
Pavano, who carried his golf clubs on the train to Baltimore the morning of
his last start in the majors, said he has stopped golfing and running
outdoors.
Pavano
“It’s not that I took anything for granted, but a lot of things are
different for me,” he said. “I had been able to lead a lifestyle that was
pretty active. After some things happened, I couldn’t be as active as I
wanted to.
“It’s just nice being able to go to bed not having to worry about how I’m
going to feel the next morning. That’s a good frame of mind to be in.”
INSIDE PITCH
Andy Pettitte threw 56 pitches in a simulated game at Legends Field on
Monday. The bench coach, Don Mattingly, played first base in the game,
scooping a low throw from Derek Jeter the way he did in his Gold Glove days.
“I just told him, ‘Don’t get hurt,’ ” Pettitte said. “I’d feel
terrible if he got a bad hop.” ... Andy Phillips faced live pitching for the
first time in almost two weeks, getting nine at-bats against Pettitte.
Phillips said his mother, who was injured in a car accident Feb. 28, was
making steady progress. ... Bobby Abreu, who has a strained oblique muscle,
has been throwing and swinging in practice without pain. Abreu will leave
camp for Philadelphia on Tuesday to attend the funeral of John Vukovich, his
former coach on the Phillies. ... Hideki Matsui exchanged bows and shared
laughs before the game with the Red Sox’ new Japanese pitchers Daisuke
Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima. Dozens of photographers and television cameras
captured the moment. Matsui lingered longer to speak with Okajima, his former
teammate on the Yomiuri Giants.
