TAMPA, Fla., March 26 — The most harrowing nightmare for the Yankees is not
losing a starting pitcher to a spring injury, which has happened three times
in the last eight days. It is losing Mariano Rivera


對洋基隊而言，
最恐怖的噩夢並不是失去一位因為春訓而受傷的先發投手，
也就是像過去8天內接連宣告受傷的那三個傢伙一樣的情況；
最可怕的時候是當洋基隊發現受傷的人是他們的終結者Rivera。

There are others who can start. But there is only one Rivera, a certain Hall
of Famer and possibly the greatest closer in history. He finished off the
Philadelphia Phillies in Monday’s 5-1 victory with his ninth scoreless
inning of the spring. Opponents are hitting .133 against Rivera, who has not
walked a batter.

當一個先發投手受傷時，總會有其它人可以接上來做先發，
但是洋基只有1個Mariano Rivera
─ 這位已經被認定為將來幾乎一定會進名人堂、
極可能是「有史以來最偉大的終結者」的人。

他在星期一對費城人隊的比賽投出了今年春訓以來第9次未失分的一局。
在春訓中，打者面對Mo只有0.133的打擊率，而且他還未保送過任何一人。

“Pretty good, good or just O.K.?” Rivera said to reporters, laughing. “I’
m ready.”

「有這樣的表現是非常好、很好還是正常？」
Mo笑著對記者說：「總之，對於2007年、另一個新的球季，我已經準備好了。」

His duty will be different this season, because Manager Joe Torre says he has
decided not to ask Rivera to get more than three outs. “I’m serious about
that,” Torre said.

Mo在這一個球季的任務將會和以前有些不同，
因為總教練Joe Torre說他已經決定無論如何都不讓Rivera在一場比賽中投超過1局。
「對於這一點考量，我是認真的。」Torre說。

It will be a significant departure for Rivera, who recorded four or more outs
in 27 percent of his games last season. It was his highest percentage of such
outings since 2001.

這對Mo而言會和過去有很明顯的不同。

在上個球季，Mo投了超過1局(起碼要解決4位打者)以上的次數佔了他去年上場時的27%。
27%，也是他在2001年球季之後的新高紀錄。

One night in May, he worked three innings in a regular-season game for the
first time in 10 years. One day in August, he was called in to protect a
six-run lead with no outs in the eighth.

在5月的某個晚上，在一場不過是1/162、再平常不過的正規球季賽當中，
他投了3局，這還是他10年終結者生涯中的第一次。

另一次是在8月的某一天的某一場比賽中，
洋基居然在第8局無人出局、卻已經擁有6分領先的情況下，
把Mo叫上場去保住比賽的勝利。

When Rivera developed a muscle strain near his right elbow, he did not pitch
for the first three weeks of September. Torre says he is no longer taking
chances.

當Mo說他靠近右手肘附近的肌肉感到有點緊的時候，
整個9月的前三個禮拜，他都沒有投球。
Torre說他不會把那時的Mo給丟上去投球。

“Last year, with the people we lost in our lineup, games that we had leads
in, we needed to win,” Torre said. “I can’t say I’d go back and change
anything. In the time I’ve been here, we have never felt that we’ve abused
him or used him for no reason.

“But with the result of what happened, we have to rethink the way we use him
from now on.”

Torre told Rivera of his plans at the start of spring training. Rivera said
he respected Torre’s wishes, but he would not say if he thought the change
would help him.

Torre在今年春訓開始時告訴Rivera他的計劃。
Mo說他尊重Torre的決定與想法，但他不會說Torre的新作法對他是不是有幫助。

“I never ask for those things,” Rivera said. “Hey, I’m a worker here. I’
m not a boss. I do what they want me to do.”

Torre made the decision in consultation with General Manager Brian Cashman.
While Cashman said he had no problem with the way Torre used Rivera, he added
that it was wise to back off this year.

Cashman說他對於Torre要如何使用Mo並沒有什麼意見，

“It’s not because he can’t handle it, but just because we want him at his
best,” Cashman said. “We had the issue with the elbow last year and he had
to be shut down. Things like that probably contributed to that. Joe’s just
trying to protect him.”

Cashman did his part by strengthening the bridge to Rivera in the late
innings. He acquired Luis Vizcaino from Arizona in the Randy Johnson trade,
importing a pitcher who ranks second among right-handers in appearances over
the past five years.

對於這點，Cashman在季後開始努力補強洋基在比賽後半段從第6局開始到第9局、
也就是Mo上場前的中繼投手群人力佈署。
他透過把Randy Johnson交易至響尾蛇隊的機會，
換來了Luis Vizcaino這位在過去五年排名第2的右投手。

With Vizcaino, Scott Proctor, Kyle Farnsworth and Brian Bruney, Rivera has
four hard-throwing right-handers to set him up.

因此，Mo會有 Vizcaino, Scott Proctor, Kyle Farnsworth 和 Brian Bruney，
幫助他在第9局投球時，手上是握有領先的。

“Look at it,” said Bruney, who had an 0.87 earned run average in 19 games
last season. “The back end of our bullpen is all throwing 95-plus. Any time
you’ve got guys throwing that hard in the bullpen, you’ve got pretty good
odds. It should be fun.”

Farnsworth, who is entering the second year of a three-year, $17 million
contract, makes more than the other three setup men combined. His results
were mixed last season: more strikeouts than innings pitched, but a 3-6
record with a 4.36 E.R.A.

Back problems made Farnsworth unavailable at least once every month, and
Torre tries not to use him on consecutive days. Farnsworth said Rivera’s
changing role would not alter the demands on him.

way I look at it. Mo’s supposed to be coming in for the ninth and not for
the eighth.

“I hope we can be better than we were last year. We just have to go out

Rivera has averaged 42 saves a season since 2003, with a sub-2.00 E.R.A. each
season. Yet with proper use, he could be ever better now. Rivera has spent
more time tinkering with a changeup this spring, using it for 3 of his 19
pitches Monday. Two were in the dirt, but that was not the point.

自2003年開始，Mo每個球季平均有42次救援成功，每個球季自責分率更低到2.00附近。
然而，如果能更加妥善、有效率地使用他，他可能會表現地比你看到的還要好。

Rivera在這個春訓中已經開始花許多時間練習他的changeup，

不過那不是重點。

“It’s something to put in the back of the hitter’s mind,” said Ben Davis,
who caught the ninth inning. “If he’s thinking, ‘Hey, he might throw this,
’ then here comes another cutter and he’s done.”

「最主要是希望能夠讓打者心中曉得Mo會有這個球路存在，」

Mo在該場比賽第9局的搭檔捕手Ben Davis說：

「如果打者在想『嘿，他下一球也可能會投changeup』，
  然後等到Mo投過來的卻還是cutter，那他就完了。」
