Three Outs Will Be All the Yankees Need From Rivera

TAMPA, Fla., March 26 — The most harrowing nightmare for the Yankees is not
losing a starting pitcher to a spring injury, which has happened three times
in the last eight days. It is losing Mariano Rivera

There are others who can start. But there is only one Rivera, a certain Hall
of Famer and possibly the greatest closer in history. He finished off the
Philadelphia Phillies in Monday’s 5-1 victory with his ninth scoreless
inning of the spring. Opponents are hitting .133 against Rivera, who has not
walked a batter.

His duty will be different this season, because Manager Joe Torre says he has
decided not to ask Rivera to get more than three outs. “I’m serious about
that,” Torre said.

It will be a significant departure for Rivera, who recorded four or more outs
in 27 percent of his games last season. It was his highest percentage of such

One night in May, he worked three innings in a regular-season game for the
first time in 10 years. One day in August, he was called in to protect a

When Rivera developed a muscle strain near his right elbow, he did not pitch

Torre made the decision in consultation with General Manager Brian Cashman.
While Cashman said he had no problem with the way Torre used Rivera, he added

Rivera has averaged 42 saves a season since 2003, with a sub-2.00 E.R.A. each
season. Yet with proper use, he could be ever better now. Rivera has spent
more time tinkering with a changeup this spring, using it for 3 of his 19
pitches Monday. Two were in the dirt, but that was not the point.

Andy Pettitte, who has missed a week with back spasms, threw 25 pitches in
the bullpen Monday and will throw again Wednesday. “Every day, I feel better,
” Pettitte said. “I felt like I was able to throw it free and easy. I didn’
t want to feel anything, and I didn’t.” Pettitte will probably make a minor
league start Friday and begin the season with the Yankees. ... Kei Igawa said
his changeup still needed work, but he tossed five strong innings Monday,
allowing a run on three hits. Igawa has a 2.65 E.R.A. over 17 innings this
spring, with 19 strikeouts and 12 walks. “As I throw more,” he said through
an interpreter, “I’m getting a lot better.” ... A magnetic resonance
imaging exam and CT scan on Jeff Karstens’s elbow revealed nothing abnormal,
General Manager Brian Cashman said. Karstens, who left Sunday’s start with
stiffness, could avoid the disabled list. ... Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run
homer in the first inning, and Doug Mientkiewicz later drove in two with a
double. Mientkiewicz has hit safely in his last three games after starting
the spring 2 for 29.
