Yankees’ Wang to Start Season on Disabled List

洋基的王建民-新球季會從傷兵名單開始

TAMPA, Fla., March 24 — The side effect of Chien-Ming Wang’s hamstring
injury, which will land him on the disabled list to start the season, is an
idea so preposterous it seems hard to fathom: Carl Pavano could be the Yankees
’ opening day starter April 2.

Manager Joe Torre said Saturday that Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina would not
be lined up properly to make the start against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at
Yankee Stadium. That leaves Kei Igawa, who has never pitched in the majors,
and Pavano, who essentially would be pitching on 643 days’ rest.

“It’s opening day, but there’s 161 other games,” Torre said at Legends
Field, after the Yankees played to a 4-4 tie with the Toronto Blue Jays. “It
certainly is an important game, but so are the other ones.”

The April 2 starter would need at least four days’ rest, and Torre does not
want to alter the schedule of Mussina, who worked six innings Saturday.
Pettitte has not started since March 17, two days before he experienced back
spasms while lifting weights.

Pettitte still needs to throw a bullpen session before making his last spring
start, and Torre said he doubted Pettitte could make it before Thursday. But
Pavano makes his next start Tuesday, which would give him five days off
before the opener.

A series of injuries has kept Pavano from pitching for the Yankees since June
27, 2005. He has poor statistics this spring — 25 base runners allowed via
hits or walks in 12 1/3 innings — but at least he is healthy.

Wang is not. A magnetic resonance imaging exam on his right leg revealed a
Grade 1 hamstring pull Saturday morning.

“Very, very sad,” Wang said. “I hope it gets better and I go back to New
York.”

Wang said he felt a pop in his hamstring while running sprints here Friday.
General Manager Brian Cashman said Wang would stay behind in Tampa when the
team breaks camp in a week.

“I don’t look for him to touch our major league roster until sometime in

He said that after a period of treatment and rest, Wang would have to resume
throwing from the mound and then pitch in some minor league games.

Wang went 19-6 with a 3.63 earned run average last season and won his start
in the division series against the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees’ only playoff

His injury comes at an opportune time, however, in that the Yankees need a
fifth starter only once in their first 17 games, thanks to off days in the
schedule. Wang’s injury virtually assures a place on the staff to Jeff
Karstens, who has had a strong spring as a starter, going 3-1 with a 2.70
E.R.A.

The Yankees have interest in Roger Clemens, who is a free agent, but Clemens
has not decided whether he wants to pitch and would not be ready until
several weeks into the season, at the earliest. In any case, Cashman said he
would not look outside the organization to fill Wang’s spot.

Pettitte, who turns 35 in June, made 35 starts for Houston last season but
considered retirement last winter because of elbow problems. Mussina, 38, has
not pitched 200 innings since 2003 and missed time with elbow trouble in two

morning. Jose Veras, a Class AAA reliever, had his right arm in a sling as he
showed teammates a small plastic container that held his bone chips. Veras,
who had elbow surgery Thursday, will miss two to three months.
