Not so fast in thinking Bernie Williams is necessarily retired.
Bernie還不想那麼快退休...
During a telephone conversation with the former Yankees outfielder yesterday,
Joe Torre was told that Williams is still working out and hasn't nixed the
possibility of playing this season, preferably for the Yankees if an
opportunity should arise.
"I know he wants to be here," Torre said.
昨天Torre曾有跟Bernie通過電話...Torre說Bernie仍然持續期待這一季出賽的可能性...
如果洋基有這個機會給他的話...
Torre說"他還想在這裡打球..."
Absent from his first Yankees opener since 1992, Williams placed a surprise
call to the clubhouse about three hours before yesterday's first pitch and
spoke with Torre, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada.
自從1992年的洋基開幕賽開始...這是Bernie的第一次缺席...
Bernie在昨天做了讓人驚奇的舉動...球賽開打前三個小時打了一通電話給球團...
並且還跟幾個人講話...這些人有Torre...Jeter...Posada...
Torre reiterated he was disappointed that Williams declined the Yankees' offer
to attend spring training as a non-roster invitee, but said he respected the
player's decision. Yesterday was the first time Torre had spoken to Williams
since late February.
Torre重申Bernie對洋基在春訓給他排在non-roster invitee感到很失望...
但是Torre還是尊重球員做的決定...從二月下旬以來昨天是Torre跟Bernie第一次談話...
Posada is "pretty sure" Williams would like to play this season. Asked if he
thought Williams could perhaps skip a year and then return in 2008, Posada
deemed it possible.
"It's a tough thing to do, especially being (38), but I'm sure he can do it if
he puts his mind to it," Posada said. "If he's working hard and does the
things that keep you in the game, I'm pretty sure anybody can do it."
Posada非常肯定的說Bernie想要打這個球季的比賽...被問到有沒有可能跳過一年...
到了2008再讓Bernie回來洋基打球...Posada認為有這個可能...
Posada說"這是個困難的事情...特別對一個38歲的球員...但是我肯定他有心就能做到..."
Jeter wouldn't divulge what he discussed with Williams, but said there wasn't
much baseball mentioned.
Would Jeter, if he were a betting man, wager on Williams playing this season?
"I wouldn't bet on Bernie with anything," Jeter said. "I really wouldn't. I
wouldn't bet on Bernie playing if he were on the team."
Jeter沒有洩漏他跟Bernie的談話...但他有說談話內容跟棒球無關...
問到Jeter...讓他猜測Bernie有沒有可能在這個球季打球...
Jeter回答"我不會想去猜測Bernie的事情..."
Of course, the Yankees, as currently constructed, don't have the need for a
backup outfielder/DH. But it takes only one injury for that entire dynamic to
change.
當然拉...現在的洋基已經不需要候補的外野手及DH...但是假如有人受傷了...
這樣的狀況可能會有一些變動...
這是一場理性與感性的拔河...Bernie還想要穿條紋球衣打球阿...T_T
