OAKLAND - With the health of both Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano in question, the
progress of Chien-Ming Wang and Jeff Karstens is becoming more important for
the Yankees.
Wang is scheduled to pitch today in an extended spring training game in Tampa,
where he will throw about 50 pitches against Tampa Bay minor leaguers. It will
mark his first action since March 23, when he suffered a strained right
hamstring while doing running drills.
Joe Torre said Wang will follow his outing with another game on Thursday, at
which time the Yankees will decide what his next step will be.
"Thursday will have an impact on what he does next, whether it's in the minor
leagues somewhere or with us," Torre said.
Should he return to the Yankees after his Thursday outing, Wang could be back
in the rotation by April 24, though it is more likely that he would make at
least one more minor-league start, which would put him in line to return on
April 29 at home against the Red Sox.
Karstens, who has been out since March25 with stiffness in his right elbow,
is scheduled to pitch for Single-A Tampa on Monday. If that goes well, he
could return next weekend.
HIDEKI ON TRACK: Hideki Matsui (hamstring) worked out before last night's game,
throwing on flat ground and taking part in tee and soft-toss hitting drills.
Matsui is eligible to return from the disabled list on April 23, and Torre
indicated that he expects to see Matsui back that day. "My understanding is
that everything went real well," Torre said....According to the Elias Sports
Bureau, Alex Rodriguez is the first Yankee to record extra-base hits in each
of his first eight games to open the season.
His 16 RBI are the most for any player in his team's first eight games since
Minnesota's Brant Alyea also had 16 in 1970. ...Since opening the season
3-for-3, Doug Mientkiewicz was hitless in his last 16 at-bats entering last
night's game. The first baseman went 0-for-10 against the Twins in Minnesota,
where he played from 1998-2004. ...Top pitching prospect Phil Hughes was hit
for five runs in five innings Thursday night in Scranton's 5-0 loss to
Richmond. Hughes is 1-1 with a 6.30 ERA in two starts
this season....Outfielder Jose Tabata is leading the Florida State League with
a .476 batting average.
