Chien-Ming Wang had the finger nail on his index finger crack in half
horizontally in the third inning. So after six innings – and six pitches
short of his pitch count – they took him out.

“I wouldn’t want to send him out there for five pitches,” Joe Torre said.

Wang said that this has happened before and he has been able to use a glue
solution to patch it up. He said he would make his next start.

As for using Scott Proctor, Torre said he he was trying to put the
right-hander in a good position. Boston had its 8 and 9 hitters up followed
by two right-handed batters. Crisp, Cora and Lugo are not the Boston players
who have hit Proctor hard in the past.

Colter Bean was available. But he had attended high school and college with
Josh Hancock, who was killed earlier in the day. Today was probably not the
day to run him out there.

Brian Cashman said that if anybody should be blamed, it’s him. “This is my
responsibility,” he said. “I put this team together.”

The Yankees used five pitchers for the 10th straight game. That is the
longest such streak in at least 50 years according to the Elias Sports
Bureau.
