For Hughes, the future begins now
Hughes的未來，就從現在開始

The Phil Hughes era will officially get underway at Yankee Stadium on
Thursday, as the most touted pitching prospect in baseball takes the mound
under the lights against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Phil Hughes的時代將在這個星期四從洋基球場正式開始，

A 20-year-old right-hander, Hughes has experienced a meteoric rise through
the Yankees' farm system, showcasing his talents last season by going 10-3
with a 2.25 ERA in 21 starts at Double-A Trenton.

"I can definitely feel the anticipation, but it's not something that will be

The Yankees had planned to let Hughes soak up some more seasoning at Triple-A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he made three starts and fared 2-1 with a 3.94
ERA. At least, the organization's thinking went, keep him in the Minors until
he can legally purchase his first beer, on June 24.

洋基原本預計要讓Hughes在3A待更長的時間，
(而他目前在3A已出賽3場，2勝1敗，3.94的自責分率。)

But with a rash of injuries depleting their starting staff -- Mike Mussina
and Carl Pavano are both on the disabled list; Chien-Ming Wang has just
returned -- and rookie fill-in Chase Wright surrendering four consecutive
home runs to the Red Sox on Sunday at Fenway Park, the Yankees' braintrust
came to the unanimous decision to promote Hughes.

"We knew he was coming. It was just a matter of when," general manager Brian
Cashman said. "It's sooner than we would have expected, but necessity
required us to line it up this way. Sometimes you've got a hole to plug, and
you've got to plug it."

In good spirits as he navigated through a press conference on Wednesday,
Hughes joked that a friend had made his way to his cell phone, lumped in with
a barrage of interview requests, ticket pursuits and well-wishers.

The opening salvo? A remark concerning Hughes' pending availability in a
fantasy baseball league.

"He's like, 'I think I'll pick you up. But you'd better be good, or I'll drop
you,' " Hughes said.

The roster move could keep Hughes in New York for just one start, but the
hurler -- who walked through the Yankees' clubhouse on Wednesday, a freshly
signed Major League contract in hand -- seems to believe it'll be for a bit
longer.

洋基的25人名單調整也許可以給Hughes在大聯盟先發一場球的機會，
但這位星期三正式走進洋基球員休息室的投手的手上，

Hughes had experienced some of the ambience of the Yankees' clubhouse in a
three-day visit to the Bronx last September, and also was a resident of their
Major League clubhouse in Spring Training the past two years.

感受一下Bronx這個傳奇之地的人、事、物，
並且在過去兩年都被邀請參加洋基的大聯盟春訓。

This spring, Hughes was given a clubhouse locker adjacent to team captain
Derek Jeter, perhaps indicative of the high regard the Yankees as an
organization hold for Hughes' future. But the players and staff remain
curious to see how Hughes' first experience on the legendary diamond plays
out.

這個春季，Hughes被球隊安排將他的置物櫃排在隊長Derek Jeter旁邊，
也許這也是在暗示著球團高層對他的高度期待。
但是球員及隊職員們仍然很好奇地想看看他在這個充滿傳奇的球場會有怎樣的表現。

"I think he'll conduct himself well," manager Joe Torre said. "Again, not to
say he's not going to get excited -- you pitch in Yankee Stadium for the
first time, and it's certainly something that's not like pitching anywhere
else. I think he'll be fine. Hopefully, he has his good stuff and he's able
to locate."

 ready or not."
