The Yankees planned for Carl Pavano and Kei Igawa to hold down spots in their
rotation this season. Yesterday, both were making plans to leave town.
Pavano will meet tomorrow with Lewis Yocum, the team doctor for the Los
Angeles Angels, who will be the fourth doctor to examine his troublesome
right elbow. Igawa was optioned to Class A Tampa, where he will work on his
mechanics while Darrell Rasner, the starter who won on Sunday, takes his spot.
Darrell Rasner
Many in the organization believe Pavano wants to have reconstructive surgery
even though his elbow may not be damaged enough to require it. Pavano said he
would rather not, though he seems resigned to it.
“I would not like to have the surgery, but if I have professionals and that’
s what they do, they make these decisions,” Pavano said. “And if it’s a
decision that they think is going to get my elbow better, that’s what I need
to do.”
When Pavano saw Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., he was found to have
some ligament damage, as many pitchers do. But the Yankees have not received
a conclusive diagnosis yet, despite sending Pavano to their doctor, Stuart
Hershon, and the Mets’ team doctor, David Altchek.
David Altchek,
Pavano has not pitched since April 9, but the Yankees seem to believe he may
be able to pitch through the pain.
“Clearly, I want to make sure we have a really accurate reading on all of
this,” General Manager Brian Cashman said. “All the best doctors, I’m
trying to pull in on this.”
The procedure under consideration is Tommy John surgery, in which an elbow
ligament is replaced by another ligament in the body. It requires at least 12
months of recovery and would essentially end Pavano’s tenure with the
Yankees, who are paying him through 2008 on a four-year, $39.95 million
contract.
“You think I’m fighting to have that done?” Pavano said. “Altchek says
there’s a tear in there.”
Asked if Pavano would make the decision on whether to have surgery, Cashman
said, “No,” but said he would not elaborate until he spoke with Yocum.
Igawa also cost the Yankees dearly: $46 million, including a $26 million fee
to the Hanshin Tigers for his negotiating rights last winter. Igawa then
signed a five-year, $20 million contract.
Igawa is second on the Yankees’ staff in innings, but not all of them have
been sharp. In six games, he is 2-1 with a 7.63 earned run average. Three
games have been good, and three have not. Manager Joe Torre said that when
Igawa’s pitches miss their location, they miss by feet.
Joe Torre
“I know the Yankees — if you don’t show the results here, pitching in the
major leagues, they demote,” Igawa said through an interpreter. “I knew
that before I signed with this team.”
The Yankees have sent other struggling pitchers to Tampa to work with an
instructor, usually Billy Connors, who tried to help Jose Contreras and
others. Now the instructors Nardi Contreras and Gil Patterson, former
pitching coaches in the majors, are charged with fixing Igawa.
Billy Connors,
“We’re going to start out with his balance point,” Nardi Contreras said. “
He’s got the stuff to pitch here in the big leagues.”
If a pitcher is not balanced, Contreras said, he tends to get under the ball
when he throws, leaving pitches high in the strike zone. Igawa does not throw
hard enough to survive that way, at least in the majors.
“The hitters here are the best in the world,” Contreras said. “They’re
bigger, stronger. Mistakes he can probably get away with in Japan, he’s not
going to get away with here.”
The Yankees have no scheduled games for Igawa, just sessions with the
coaches. Contreras said he had compiled videos of successful major league
left-handers like Mark Buehrle and Tom Glavine to show Igawa, who has many
adjustments to make.
“It’s not only the baseball, but it’s also the way my lifestyle has
changed completely,” he said. “The routine, the number of days between
pitching, has changed completely. It’s everything. When I go to the minors, I
’ll do my best to adjust and get back up.”
PROCTOR IS SUSPENDED Scott Proctor led the majors in relief innings last
season, when Joe Torre used him 83 times. Perhaps the only way for Proctor to
get a break is to be suspended by Major League Baseball, and that happened
yesterday.
“I should have thought of that last year,” Proctor said yesterday,
jokingly, after he was suspended for four games and fined $1,500 for throwing
behind Seattle’s Yuniesky Betancourt on Sunday.
Proctor appealed the suspension and was eligible for last night’s game.
Torre, who was automatically suspended for the game, said he did not question
Proctor, even though the matter seemed to be resolved when Seattle’s Jarrod
Washburn hit Josh Phelps, who had made a hard slide on catcher Kenji Johjima.
“Scotty’s heart was in the right place,” Torre said. “It’s hard for me
to get angry with someone who felt he was protecting his people, whether it
was the right or wrong thing to do.”
THE TORRE-CLEMENS FACTOR When George Steinbrenner, the Yankees’ principal
owner, considered firing Joe Torre at the end of April, General Manager Brian
Cashman said he gave him a warning: If you fire Torre, you will lose any
chance to sign Roger Clemens.
Torre-Clemens
Brian
Roger
Clemens
“It certainly came up in my talks with ownership,” Cashman said. “I
thought if Joe Torre wasn’t here, Roger wouldn’t want to be here either. I
don’t believe Roger would have come here in a circumstance if we were
struggling and had a manager change.”
Cashman was right. Clemens told ESPN yesterday that Torre was essential to
his return.
“I know I wouldn’t be playing here in New York,” Clemens said. “If Joe
was let go, there would have been no reason.”
STUDENT STILL THE STUDENT When Chien-Ming Wang was growing up in Taiwan, the
one American pitcher he most looked up to was Roger Clemens. Perhaps, a
reporter suggested, Wang could teach Clemens how to throw his trademark
sinker. Wang smiled and laughed.
“No,” Wang said. “He’s better than me.”
