Bombers not in shipshape

Heading into last night's game, the Yankees had to feel pretty good about
themselves. Kei Igawa was coming off a superb performance, the lineup was
beginning to click and the atmosphere in the clubhouse was positive following
the Bombers' three-game sweep of Texas.
The hitters held up their end of the bargain at the Stadium, but the Mariners
pounded Igawa and a pair of relievers, handing the Yankees a 15-11 loss that
snapped that three-game winning streak.
"We just couldn't get outs," Joe Torre said. "You can't expect to survive
when you can't get people out."
Seattle used an eight-run fifth inning to overcome an early five-run deficit,
as Igawa, Colter Bean and Luis Vizcaino couldn't stop the onslaught before it
got out of hand.
The Yankees (12-15) knocked Seattle pitching around for 16 hits, but it was
the fifth time in their 15 losses that the Yankees had scored six or more
runs.
"Ninety-nine percent of the time when we score 11 runs, we're going to win,"
Derek Jeter said. "Today was just one of those days."
The Bombers threatened late, bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth
with one out. But Johnny Damon popped out and Jeter grounded out to end the
game. Jeter went 0-for-6, snapping his 20-game hitting streak, the longest in
the majors this season.
"I'm very proud of my team," Torre said. "They fell way behind and never
stopped fighting."
The lone bright spot for the pitching staff was Mike Myers, who tossed four
innings of one-run ball to close out the game, saving the bullpen from being
overworked heading into the weekend.
"It's fun when you're out there doing it and getting good results," Myers
said. "But you know why you're out there, so you can't really enjoy it that
much."
Despite a late-night flight from Dallas that got them to New York at around
5:30 a.m., the Yankees carried the momentum from their doubleheader sweep
into the first inning, tagging Seattle pitcher Cha Seung Baek for five runs.
Seven of the first eight hitters reached base, and four different Yankees
drove in runs.
Staked to the five-run lead, Igawa gave back one in the second on Kenji
Johjima's third homer of the year, then two more in the third on Adrian
Beltre's two-run blast.
Hideki Matsui added a run to the Yankees' lead in the third with his second
homer of the year, but Igawa struggled again in the fourth. Yuniesky
Betancourt doubled in a run, then Jose Lopez crushed a two-run homer to left,
tying the game at 6.
"The first inning was fine," Torre said. "Then it was just a matter of a lack
of command. He didn't make enough good pitches."
A-Rod gave the Yankees another lead with a two-run double in the fourth, but
neither he nor any of his teammates had any idea of what was to come.
The Mariners went on a tear in the fifth, starting with singles by Jose Vidro
and Raul Ibanez that drove Igawa from the game. Torre called on Bean (0-1),
who posted one of the worst outings in recent memory.
The righty started with eight consecutive balls to Richie Sexson and Jose
Guillen, forcing a run home. He got a Bronx cheer from the crowd after
throwing a first-pitch strike to Johjima, who then went on to single in
another run.
Betancourt doubled in two more, and after Bean threw two balls to Lopez,
Torre lifted him for Vizcaino.
"That's as bad as it gets. No excuses; I was just pretty bad," Bean said.
"I'm up here to throw strikes. That's my goal. When you don't do that, you
let your whole team down."
Vizcaino served up a two-run single to Lopez, then three more singles to the
next four hitters, the last of which was a two-run hit by Ibanez, putting the
Mariners ahead 14-8.
Torre said he felt "helpless" during the half-inning, which had 13 batters
came to the plate against three pitchers and lasted 30 minutes. Jeter even
had to run off the field during one of the pitching changes to use the
bathroom.
"All it does is reemphasize how important pitching is," Torre said. "You have
to get outs."
Damon's three-run homer to right made it 15-11 in the seventh. But after the
Yanks loaded the bases in the ninth against Brandon Morrow and J.J. Putz,
Damon popped out to first and Jeter grounded out to short to end it.
