Sisyphus was the mythological Greek who was cursed to roll a boulder up the
peak of a mountain only to have it roll down again for all eternity. DeSalvo
can relate. After three seasons of steadily moving up the mountain, the
boulder crushed him last season.
The Yankees' minor-league pitcher of the year in 2005, DeSalvo seemed on the
verge of being called up to the majors and was assigned to Triple-A Columbus.
"He was great," catcher Wil Nieves said. "Big-league fastball, big-league
breaking pitches, everything you want. He was going up."
But DeSalvo lasted only two months in Columbus, going 1-6 with a 7.68 ERA
before getting demoted to Double-A Trenton.
It didn't get much better there as DeSalvo went 5-4 with a 5.77 ERA.
"It was a bad season, there is no getting around that," said Nardi Contreras,
the organization's minor-league pitching coordinator. "But there were
reasons. He was going through a tough time off the field."
Teammates and coaches say DeSalvo broke up with a longtime girlfriend. It's
not a subject he cares to discuss at length.
"You're not going to get that out of me," DeSalvo said. "It's very difficult
to separate off-the-field and on-the-field stuff. The guys who do it
efficiently are the guys who are successful in this game. It's difficult to
explain the mental process of what happened, to break myself down
psychologically."
The final blow came in late January, when DeSalvo was dropped off the 40-man
roster and designated for assignment. He cleared waivers and was retained by
the Yankees.
