Several people have commented on the blog that Roger Clemens won’t make his
comeback at Fenway Park June 1, 2 or 3 because Joe Torre wouldn’t throw him
to the wolves like that.
Maybe so. But this is a guy who snuck into Yankee Stadium and made a dramatic
announcement from the owner’s box. Somehow I don’t think he shrinks from
the big stage.
And 38pitches.com saying, “We don’t need him” might be a little
motivation, too.
If Clemens is ready, Clemens will pitch. The Yankees aren’t dropping $4.5
million a month to have him watch those games.
A few other Clemens-related notes:
It was very interesting to hear Brian Cashman mention “the Steinbrenner
family” instead of just Steinbrenner yesterday. It would seem Hank and
Hal Steinbrenner are really in the mix. …
Houston GM Tim Purpura said it wouldn’t be appropriate for Clemens to work
out at the Class A Lexington Legends facility. Can’t say I disagree with
that. But Roger says he is going to Kentucky, so there must be something
planned for the next week. …
In researching the book that Mark, Sam and I did on Chien-Ming Wang, we
learned that Wang really idolizes Clemens. I know it’s not the primary
reason, but having Clemens around guys like Wang, Phil Franchise, Brian
Bruney and Scott Proctor will help the Yankees moving forward.
Finally, if you’re around a television at 3:30 p.m., check out “Outside the
Lines” on ESPN. They’re having me on for a few minutes from Yankee Stadium
to talk about the Rocket.
