Yankees Overwhelmed by Texas Rangers The New York Times May 11, 2007 Starting pitcher Chien-Ming Wang was not at his best and neither were his teammates as the Yankees lost to the Texas Rangers, 14-2, Thursday afternoon in the final game of a one-week home stand. Although the Yankees were charged with no errors, they had several fielding problems at critical moments. The defeat dropped the Yankees back below .500 at 16-17. Wang gave up seven earned runs in six and one-third innings. The team gave up another seven runs in a half-hour long top of the eighth inning which included a grand slam from the Rangers픠Victor Diaz off relief pitcher Sean Henn. In Wang's previous start, last Saturday against Seattle, he took a perfect game into the eighth inning and gave up two hits in eight full innings in an 8-1 victory. But against the Rangers, Wang (1-3) walked the first batter, Kenny Lofton, who scored on a single by Sammy Sosa during a 23-pitch first inning. The Yankees tied it in the third on a solo home run by Melky Cabrera off Texas starter Brandon McCarthy (3-4). It was the first home run for Cabrera since last August, when he homered off the same pitcher, who was then with the Chicago White Sox. Wang settled down until the fifth inning, when Texas took a 4-1 lead, partly because of poor fielding by the Yankees. The key play was the one that gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead. With one out and Gerald Laird at third base, Brad Wilkerson hit a ground ball to third. Alex Rodriguez fielded it and threw home to Jorge Posada, the catcher. Laird appeared to be caught in a rundown but Posada threw back to Rodriguez, who chased Laird home and put the tag on him, too late. Wang was covering home but did not get a relay from Rodriguez. Laird had tripled when Bobby Abreu misplayed his fly ball to the warning track in right field. Singles by Mark Teixeira and Sosa added two more runs and the Rangers led, 4-1. The Yankees knocked McCarthy out of the game in the sixth inning when Derek Jeter doubled and Rodriguez walked to put two men on with one out. Frank Francisco replaced him and retired Hideki Matsui on a fly to right and Posada on a pop to short. Texas chased Wang in the seventh with a three-run rally that increased the Rangers픠lead to 7-1. Laird started it with an infield hit followed by Lofton's single, Wilkerson's sacrifice fly and Teixeira's double. After Luis Vizcaino replaced Wang, a double by Hank Blalock scored another run, the last charged to Wang. In the eighth, the Rangers픠rally was aided by a ground-rule double by Mark Teixeira that Miguel Cairo, playing left field, seemed to lose in the sun. The Yankees are to leave for Seattle after the game for a three-game series against the Mariners followed by three in Chicago against the White Sox next week and three at Shea Stadium against the Mets on May 18, 19 and 20. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 219.70.165.2
