Torre might reach into minors again for Sunday starter

CHICAGO -- Mike Mussina and Kei Igawa have been ruled out to start
Sunday for the Yankees at Shea Stadium. And Chien-Ming Wang might have
taken himself out of the running last night.

With Wang throwing 91 pitches last night, the Yankees have to decide
whether they should bring him back on short rest. The other choice is
calling up someone from the minors to face the Mets.

"We have some options to look at," manager Joe Torre said.

Tuesday's rainout fouled up the rotation. The Yankees were waiting to
see how Wang fared in the nightcap of yesterday's day-night doubleheader
before considering him for Sunday, and he wound up throwing seven
innings -- but only one with more than 15 pitches.

"Wang is an option," Torre said earlier in the day, "but we'd have to be
really comfortable (with his pitch count) in (yesterday's) second game.

"If there are any questions, should we or shouldn't we, we won't."

Wang has never started on short rest, although he did start two days
after an emergency relief appearance in 2006.

Torre said he will not use Mussina on three days' rest, something
Mussina hasn't done since July 2004.

If the Yankees promote a pitcher, he could replace Darrell Rasner or
Matt DeSalvo for one start, with that spot in the rotation then taken by
Roger Clemens -- assuming Clemens needs just two minor-league starts to
get ready, which seems possible.

Candidates at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre include lefty Chase Wright
(7.88 ERA in two starts during an earlier call-up), Tyler Clippard (3-0,
1.46 ERA over his past four starts) and Steven Jackson (3-3, 4.89 ERA
for the season).

 In his last start before being sent back down, Wright became just the
second pitcher ever to surrender four straight homers. But Torre
indicated he has not given up on Wright.

"I have no problem with Chase Wright," Torre said. "He has a good
(mental) makeup as far as I'm concerned."

Jorge Posada hit safely in both games yesterday to extend his hitting
streak to 11 games, matching his career best set in 2001.

Posada had two hits in the opener. In the nightcap, he entered as a
pinch hitter and homered in the ninth inning. He is batting .478 in May
(22-for-46).

The homer was the 202nd of Posada's career, tying him with Bill Dickey
for 11th most in franchise history.

Igawa has been working with pitching coordinator Nardi Contreras on
refining his delivery. Igawa, demoted on May 7, had been swinging his
right leg out too far and tilting his head back; now he is working on
staying more on a line toward home plate, which should help his command.

With Igawa scheduled to throw a side session today and test his new
mechanics Saturday with Class-A Tampa, the Yankees would prefer he not
try to work on adjustments in the majors.

"(Sunday at Shea) would be a long shot," Torre said, "based on the fact
that would be the first game he'd be trying something."

In a Sports Illustrated poll of 464 players, Alex Rodriguez got the
fourth most votes for "least friendly player in baseball" -- behind
Barry Bonds, Jeff Kent and A.J. Pierzynski and ahead of Randy Johnson
and Curt Schilling....

Phil Hughes (strained left hamstring) has been throwing on flat ground
in Tampa and could be working soon off a half-mound. ... Pitching
prospect Dellin Betances threw an inning Tuesday in extended spring
training after missing a few weeks with shoulder soreness. And
right-hander Steve White, the team's fourth-round pick in 2003 who came
down with a sore shoulder in spring training, returned to action this
week in extended spring training.
