In a decisive defeat, like the 14-2 loss the Texas Rangers handed the Yankees
yesterday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, it might be an overstatement to cite
one botched play as a turning point.

But it was difficult to ignore the failed rundown along the third-base line

It happened after Chien-Ming Wang, the Yankees’ starter, seemed to have
settled down after some early and uncharacteristic inconsistency. With Gerald
Laird on third base and one out, Brad Wilkerson hit a hard grounder to
Rodriguez at third base.

With Laird apparently trapped off the base, Rodriguez threw to Posada, the

stopped the figurative bleeding as the Rangers scored two more runs that
inning and compiled a total of 16 hits against four pitchers, including
Victor Diaz’s grand slam against Sean Henn in the seven-run eighth.

Rodriguez after Rodriguez had asked for the ball. “He called for it,” Posada

Rodriguez provided even fewer details, joking that “I thought I was faster”

games this season. Melky Cabrera hit a bases-empty home run against McCarthy
in the third. Mark Teixeira had four hits for Texas, and he and Wilkerson
each drove in three runs.

Jason Giambi, who missed the past two games with a bone spur on his left
heel, visited a foot specialist and said he would play tonight in Seattle
when the Yankees begin a nine-game trip.

In the fifth inning, Abreu failed to catch a fly ball by Laird that fell for
a triple and led to the run scoring on the botched rundown.

The defeat dropped the Yankees below .500 again at 16-17.
