MLB tells Giambi to keep his mouth shut on steroids

NEW YORK - Jason Giambi's admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs
was hardly a surprise. He reportedly told a federal grand jury the same thing
in 2003.

When that testimony was leaked to the San Francisco Chronicle a year later,
Giambi used some carefully chosen words to apologize for his actions without
directly admitting to anything.

But the designated hitter of the Yankees took it a step further on Thursday
in Chicago when he told a reporter from USA Today that he was wrong for
doing, "that stuff."

Now Major League Baseball has launched an investigation into Giambi's
disclosure and ordered him to stop speaking about the issue.

"I'm not going to discuss the matter any more," Giambi said within minutes of
arriving at Shea Stadium for last night's game against the Mets. "Sorry about
that."

But on Thursday, Giambi said baseball should apologize for what has come to
be known as its steroids era.

"What we should have done a long time ago was stand up - players, ownership,
everybody - and said: 'We made a mistake,' " he said.

"We should have apologized back then and made sure we had a rule in place and
gone forward. ... Steroids and all of that was a part of history. But it was
a topic that everybody wanted to avoid. Nobody wanted to talk about it."

Giambi went on to say he believes he is tested more than anybody other player
in the sport and that he is clean.

"That stuff didn't help me hit home runs," he said. "I don't care what people
say, nothing is going to give you that gift of hitting a baseball."

Indications yesterday were that Giambi believed his comments were off the
record. But that won't stop the commissioner's office from looking into the
matter. It also could embolden the Yankees into trying to void his contract.

The Associated Press reported that Yankees president Randy Levine spoke with
MLB vice president of labor relations Rob Manfred yesterday.

MLB vice president of public relations Pat Courtney said central baseball
would have no comment on the matter. But Yankees general manager Brian
Cashman confirmed an investigation had been ordered.

"I think the commissioner's office is going to be looking into this. So at
this point, I just can't comment on it," he said.

Manager Joe Torre also had no comment, saying he had been placed under a gag
order by the commissioner's office.

It's unclear what - if anything - MLB or the Yankees could do to Giambi.

The policy to suspend players for using performance-enhancing drugs wasn't in
place until 2005. Giambi has never tested positive. So unless he admitted to
using the drugs since 2005, there is no avenue to suspend him.

The Yankees looked into voiding Giambi's contract in 2004 but determined they
could not because of the lack of specific language involving steroid use.

Giambi is signed through the end of the 2008 season. He is owed $15.8 million
this season, $21 million in 2008 and a $5 million buyout in 2009 unless the
team picks up a $22 million option.

Giambi is hitting .270 with five homers and 18 RBI this season. He was used
as pinch hitter with two outs and a runner in the ninth inning last night. He
had a nine-pitch at-bat against Billy Wagner before striking out to end the
game.

Cashman did comment when asked whether he believed an apology should be
extended by baseball.

"There's an implication that there was a lot of people that were involved
that would know that, what was going on, and I can tell you that's false," he
said. "We've spoken to that in the past, so I do have a problem with that,
without a doubt. Because I can tell you - I can speak from being right there,
too - that whatever goes on individually with these guys, is really on them."

現在大聯盟官方將對他進行調查，確認他是在何時用藥。
大聯盟直到2005年才開始對使用類固醇的球員給予禁賽處分，若是他在2005年之後使用
類固醇，他才會受到逞處。
