Mussina, Wang on tap for doubleheader

After rain washed away the evening at U.S. Cellular Field, wiping out
the Yankees and White Sox after nearly two hours of waiting, the two
clubs will try again in a split-admission doubleheader on Wednesday.
In the first game of the twin bill, starting at 2:05 p.m. ET,
Mike Mussina will be making his fifth start of the season against
the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, coming off a pair of sharp
efforts against the Texas Rangers after losing time to a strained
left hamstring earlier this season.
In his most recent effort, Mussina limited the Rangers to two runs
and three hits over six innings on May 9 at Yankee Stadium. Mussina
will be looking to surpass Yankees Hall of Famer Herb Pennock for
sole possession of 50th place on the all-time wins list with his
242nd career victory.
The White Sox counter with left-hander John Danks, who will be making
his seventh start of the season. Danks picked up a win at the Metrodome
in his last start on May 9.
In Game 2, to begin at 8:11 p.m., the Yankees go with right-hander
Chien-Ming Wang. By the law of averages, it would be fair to say that
the year hasn't been quite up to the expectations for Wang, who finished
second in the American League Cy Young Award balloting last season after
posting 19 victories, which tied him for the circuit lead.
Wang will have his latest opportunity to turn his campaign around on
Wednesday, when he takes on the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
Wang has made just one career start against Chicago, taking a no-decision
in a five-inning performance last Aug. 8.
The White Sox counter with a face that should be familiar to most Yankees
fans: right-hander Jose Contreras. The Cuban defector will be making his
eighth start of the season and his third at home against the Yankees,
for whom he won 15 games in 2003 and 2004.

GAME 1
NYY: RHP Mike Mussina (2-1, 4.76 ERA)
In each full season since joining the Yankees in 2001,
Mussina has started at least 25 games and finished at
least three games above .500. According to the Elias
Sports Bureau, the only other Yankees pitchers to
begin their careers with similar streaks were Allie
Reynolds (1947-52) and Andy Pettitte (1995-2001).
CWS: LHP John Danks (1-4, 4.33 ERA)
The 22-year-old rookie could spell trouble for the Yankees'
predominantly left-handed lineup. In his brief big-league career,
Danks has limited lefties to a .167 average, compared with .272
for righties.

CWS: RHP Jose Contreras (3-3, 3.79 ERA)
Contreras is 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA in four lifetime starts against the
Yankees. He is coming off his second career shutout on Thursday at
Minnesota, allowing five hits and striking four in a 98-pitch performance.

Joe Crede has only seen Wang for two at-bats, but he's made the most of it.
Crede had a big day when Wang faced Chicago last year, going 2-for-2 with
a home run off the right-hander.
