Yankees, Vizcaino searching for answers

SEATTLE - When the Yankees traded Randy Johnson to the Arizona Diamondbacks
on Jan. 9, the idea was to save a large chunk of the money remaining on his
contract and add some prospects to the team's inventory in the minor leagues.

The right-handed reliever from the Dominican Republic had appeared in 70
games for Arizona in 2006, serving as the primary setup man. The Yankees
expected he would fill the same role for them.

But Vizcaino has instead been the least reliable reliever in the bullpen. In
18 innings, he has allowed 18 hits and 13 walks. Vizcaino's latest blowup

What's surprising to the Yankees is that outside of Mariano Rivera, Vizcaino
was the team's top reliever in spring training, allowing two earned runs on
seven hits in 10 innings. He walked two and struck out 10.

He followed that up by pitching almost flawlessly over the first two weeks of
the regular season. In eight appearances, Vizcaino allowed one run on two
hits over 8 1/3 innings.

"We thought we had something," pitching coach Ron Guidry said.

But in his last 11 appearances, Vizcaino has given up 16 hits and walked nine
in 9 2/3 innings. Worried that he was being overworked, manager Joe Torre
gave Vizcaino five days off before using him on Thursday against Texas.

With the Yankees down 5-1 and a runner on second, Vizcaino entered the game

The concern is that Vizcaino might be injured. Torre himself sat with the
reliever on the flight here and talked the situation over.

Guidry had Vizcaino in the bullpen early yesterday afternoon working on his
pitches, particularly his slider. Guidry has noticed that Vizcaino has an
inconsistent arm angle and release point. That often leaves his slider flat.

Vizcaino thought he had made a smooth transition to the Yankees based on his
performance in spring training and the first two weeks of the season. He was
overworked because of the team's inconsistent starting pitching, but so were
all of the relievers.

"It's not that," he said. "I'm used to pitching every day. I know I can do

For now, Torre will use Vizcaino earlier in the game and rely more on Brian
Bruney, Kyle Farnsworth and Scott Proctor in the seventh and eighth innings.

"There's not much else we can do at this point except let him pitch his way
out of it," general manager Brian Cashman said. "It's unfortunate because
