Magical Night for Rookie Pitcher

Tyler Clippard spent Saturday night at a hotel in New Jersey, and he planned
to arrive at Shea Stadium at 4 p.m. yesterday. He expected snarled highways,
and a car service picked him up at 2:30.

Yet when Clippard arrived in the Yankees’ clubhouse just 45 minutes later,
he was the only player there. It was the first of several pleasant surprises
on a night that ended with his first major league victory.

Clippard, 22, allowed three hits over six innings in the Yankees’ 6-2
victory over the Mets. He thought he would be nervous, but he hardly was. And
though he had bragged about his hitting prowess to his teammates at Class AAA
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he probably could not have expected to smash a double
to right-center field.

Clippard wore No. 79 in spring training and dressed at the bank of lockers in
the middle of the clubhouse, where the first players to be cut reside. He
pitched only three times for the Yankees, but made an impression, like many
others his age.

“I said in spring training it was nice to have that reservoir of players
down there we know we can reach down and get in case we get into trouble,”
Manager Joe Torre said before the game.

Then Torre paused, for effect. “I didn’t mean every one of them,” he said,
smiling. “We’ve had just about every one of them up here.”

Each of the call-ups has a victory: Chase Wright, Phil Hughes, Matt DeSalvo
and now Clippard. With a funky delivery — as he rocks forward, he punches
the air with his glove, as if reaching for an item on a high shelf —
Clippard mixed his changeup, curveball and average fastball to strike out six
with three walks.

“He pitched his game,” said Nardi Contreras, the minor league pitching
coordinator who flew to New York to watch. “He didn’t try to be something
that he’s not. He’s an off-speed pitcher — great changeup and curveball.
It all clicked.”

For the Yankees, who are 10 ? games out of first place, his effort was an
enormous lift with the first-place Boston Red Sox looming tonight in the
Bronx. Even Torre conceded that this stretch was the toughest the Yankees
have endured in his 12 years as manager.

“We needed it just because we needed a win,” Torre said. “Certainly you
feel better about yourself, whether you’re about to play Boston or any other

Clippard became the seventh rookie starter for the Yankees, the most any team
has used over the first 42 games of a season since baseball defined rookie
status in the 1950s, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Yankees’
clubhouse, so often unreachable for prospects in the team’s farm system, is
suddenly a land of opportunity.

“Everybody knows this season has been out of the ordinary, and this ball
club’s way better than whatever has taken place so far,” Clippard said,
describing the view from Scranton. “We’re the Yankees’ organization, so
everybody cares about what this team does. I know we’re going to turn it
around, for sure.”

While Clippard waited for his new teammates to arrive yesterday, he poked
around empty Shea Stadium, taking in the vastness of more than 55,000 seats
from the visitors dugout.

“I was just trying to get comfortable with my surroundings,” Clippard said,

In other words, he had to lie to himself, and he knew it. By the time he
threw his first pitch, an 89-mile-an-hour fastball called a strike to Jose
Reyes, he expected to be a wreck. Instead, he was calm.

“I thought I was going to be more nervous than I actually was,” he said.

Yet Clippard remained composed, even in the second inning, when he gave up a
homer to David Wright and walked pitcher John Maine to load the bases with
two outs for Reyes.

Clippard got a called strike with a changeup, and then threw a fastball for a
ball. Two more changeups missed high, and the crowd was chanting Reyes’s
first name. One more ball and Clippard would walk in a run. But he fired a
low fastball and Reyes flied out to left.

“Once he got through that second inning,” Torre said, “I felt pretty good
about it.”

So did Clippard, who kept a game ball and a lineup card. After the clubhouse
cleared, he crossed the Shea Stadium grass on his way to the team bus with
his cellphone pressed to his ear. He had a good story to share.
Clippard也是 他保留了一顆比賽球(應該是他擊出安打的那顆) 還有先發打線表
在離開球員俱樂部 要穿過Shea Stadium的草地去搭球隊巴士
他在講手機 看來他有很好的故事要分享
