“I can't keep pitching like this,” said Mussina, who has a 6.52 earned run
average. “It's depressing, frustrating and disappointing, and not what we
need right now. I can't stand it.”

Mussina retired nine hitters in a row after Mike Lowell led off the fourth
with a homer down the left-field line. It was the only painless stretch on a
night in which the Red Sox battered him for 10 hits and 7 runs in six and two-
thirds innings.

“It's almost June, and I don't feel like I've done anything as far as
contributing up to this point,” Mussina said. “We've played two months
and we haven't done very well, and I'm part of that because I haven't done
very well. I haven't been out there the whole season. When I do get a chance
to be out there, I want to do what I'm supposed to be doing, and that hasn't
happened.”

With a choice of giving an extra day of rest this week to Chien-Ming Wang
or Mussina, Manager Joe Torre kept Wang on his regular turn and had Mussina
pitch with five days off. Mussina has not asked to customize his schedule,
even though it may help him.

“I don't have that luxury,” he said. “When Wang and Pettitte are throwing
the way they're throwing, and Roger coming in the near future, I pitch
whenever I get a chance.”
