Johnny in five? Checking in with Torre and the Yankees training staff on
Saturday morning, one day after leaving a game with calf cramps, Johnny Damon
suggested that he could return to full duty and the lineup within five days
or fewer.

That vow was enough to stave off thoughts of a possible stint on the disabled
list for Damon, who has played with numerous aches and pains this season.
The campaign has tested his resolve, as Damon said it has been difficult to
keep his usual jovial attitude.

Torre has been satisfied with Damon's honesty regarding the injuries, which
have prompted him to seek chiropractic assistance on off-days.

Damon checked in with bench coach Don Mattingly around the fifth inning of
Friday's game and informed him that both calves were cramping, and was lifted
for a pinch-hitter -- Melky Cabrera -- in the seventh inning.

Torre said that the continuing calf cramps could prove to be less treatable
than the fractured foot that Damon endured last season, if only because there's
no padding that can be done to comfort them. For now, Damon is limited to
relying upon massage therapy and long soaks in the whirlpool bath.

"The legs, to me, are what it's all about for those guys who rely on their
speed," Torre said. "I think this is more of a nuisance and probably affects
him more."
