Quite a newsy day for the Yankees. To recap:

Jason Giambi met with MLB officials.
Roger Clemens pitched 5.1 innings for Trenton
Carl Pavano is now officially Fredo. We won’t be seeing him again.
Phil Hughes threw off the mound in the Tampa
The Yankees gave $1 million to Virginia Tech

And of course the local nine beat the Bostonians 8-3 to win the series. It
was the first series victory for the Yankees going back to their taking two
of three from Texas from May 8-10.

Andy Pettitte (7 9 1 1 1 2) came up big and Derek Jeter once again showed why
leadership isn’t about making statements to the media or holding team
meetings. Leadership is getting three hits, scoring two runs and driving in
two others in a game your team needs.

It seemed fitting that Jeter passed Joe DiMaggio tonight for most hits in
team history. Joe D wasn’t much for making speeches from what I know. But he
won a lot of games.

"Derek transcends leadership,” Hideki Matsui told be through his
translator, Roger Kahlon. “I have played with many great players with the
Yankees and Giants but nobody like Jeter. He runs, he hits, he fields and he
plays well in the clutch. He is truly a great player.”

Or, as Pettitte said, “Derek is the greatest player I’ve ever played with.”

Joe Torre won his 1,100th game with the Yankees tonight. Of course he had
nothing to do with most of them. He just sat there. But he screwed up all the
losses, right?

We should know tomorrow where Roger Clemens will pitch next. Meanwhile, Peter
Gammons is reporting that the story Giambi flunked the amphetamines test may
not be true.
