Yankees finding new ways to lose ballgames

TORONTO - The Yankees have been adept at finding ways to lose this season.
But what transpired at the Rogers Centre last night was a new low in their
seemingly unending search for rock bottom.

On a day they had a rare pregame infield practice, the Yankees committed two
errors that led to two unearned runs and were beaten 3-2 by the Toronto Blue
Jays.

That's five straight losses for the Yankees. They are 14 1/2 games out of
first place, their largest deficit at this point in the season since 1984.

"You want to keep it positive, but it's tough to keep it positive," said
Jorge Posada, who had one of the Yankees' five hits. "You continue to think
ahead. It's really, really tough right now. Nothing's coming our way."

Andy Pettitte pitched another strong game, holding Toronto to one earned run
in 7 1/3 innings. But he was undone by three defensive mistakes, one of his
own, and a continued lack of run support.

"We have to keep plugging," manager Joe Torre said. "You've heard this story
before."

Down 1-0, the Yankees tied the score in the seventh when Jason Giambi homered
to center off reliever Scott Downs and limped around the bases on his sore
left foot.

"I was hoping that was going to get us going," Giambi said. "Andy was
pitching great."

But Pettitte slipped in the bottom of the inning, allowing singles by Frank
Thomas and Aaron Hill with one out. A ground ball to third by slow-footed
Jason Phillips should have ended the inning.

But after stepping on the bag for the second out, Alex Rodriguez threw low to
first, pulling Josh Phelps off the bag. Hill went to third on the play.

With Royce Clayton at the plate and the count 1-1, Hill took a walking lead
off third base, put his head down and went for the plate. The left-handed
Pettitte had his back to him.

Phelps, Posada and Rodriguez yelled at Pettitte to throw home. He did, but
the accurate throw was too late, and Hill slid in safely.

"I definitely felt my heart beating, because I've never done that before,"
Hill said. "I didn't know what was going to happen. I just pictured the
umpire calling me safe."

Hill said third-base coach Brian Butterfield, a former Yankees assistant,
came up with the idea. Butterfield was last on the staff in 1995, Pettitte's
rookie season.

"I got taken advantage of," Pettitte said. "I'm still trying to figure out
how that can happen. ... It's embarrassing that a guy's able to get home and
cost you a ballgame."

Pettitte said a left-handed pitcher can't check the runner at third and
relies on his fielders to tell him if there's action.

"You're just not expecting that," he said. "You wouldn't think it would be
possible to do."

The Yankees tied the score in the eighth when Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez
reached on errors and Posada delivered an RBI single. But Jeremy Accardo came
in and struck out Giambi before getting Phelps to ground out to end the
inning.

Pettitte started the eighth inning despite having thrown 102 pitches. Adam
Lind doubled to left, then was sacrificed to third by John McDonald. Scott
Proctor relieved Pettitte and allowed a sacrifice fly by Alex Rios.

The first run Pettitte allowed came courtesy of a throwing error by Jeter in
the first inning. Pettitte has a 2.51 ERA but is 3-4. He has allowed only 10
earned runs in his last six starts and has two wins to show for it.

"Andy was incredible. That was about as courageous a game ... what can you
say? We expect the result is going to be different," Torre said.

Accardo (1-0) retired all five batters he faced to get the win. The Yankees
will try to avoid a sweep tonight with rookie Tyler Clippard on the mound.

"There's a mountain to climb," Torre said. "Everybody feels it."
