Yankees let one get away at Fenway

BOSTON - Derek Jeter scattered the patrons in Green Monster seats in the
seventh inning yesterday, hitting a home run off Joel Pineiro to give the
Yankees a lead.

The Yankees were nine outs away from at least giving pause to the thought
that the Boston Red Sox would roll through the American League East
unchallenged this season.

But nine outs at Fenway Park can be hard to come by, almost as hard as that
winning streak the Yankees keep promising but never deliver.

Two errors and three walks led to five Boston runs in the seventh inning as
the Yankees were beaten 11-6 on what might have been the most disconsolate
day in a season already loaded with them.

The Yankees learned during the game that Roger Clemens has a groin strain and
will not make his return to the team tomorrow in Chicago. He will be out at
least a week, if not two.

Just a short while later, Doug Mientkiewicz was nearly knocked out in a
violent collision at first base and was taken to Massachusetts General
Hospital. He will become the 12th player placed on the disabled list this
season when he goes on it today.

"It would have been nice to at least get a win," Jeter said. "But it hasn't
been that way this season."

The teams will play the final game of the series tonight with Andy Pettitte
facing Josh Beckett. A loss would drop the Yankees 14 1/2 games behind their
rivals.

The Yankees had leads of 1-0, 5-3 and 6-5 but gave it back each time. Mike
Mussina lasted only five innings, giving up five runs on nine hits. The
bullpen was worse, allowing six runs in three innings.

"We had three different leads and couldn't hold on to them," manager Joe
Torre said. "You have to have better pitching, that's just common sense."

Mussina has pitched poorly in three of his last four starts and has an ERA of
6.25. He left after giving up back-to-back home runs to Mike Lowell and Jason
Varitek.

"It's becoming too much too often. It's very frustrating and I'm getting
tired of it," Mussina said. "I've never pitched this way and I don't like
pitching this way. I can't stand it."

With the score 5-5, Jeter homered off Pineiro in the seventh. Then the
Yankees let the game get away with a flurry of mistakes.

It started when David Ortiz drove a ball to right field off Scott Proctor.
Bobby Abreu got back to the low wall but was unable to make the catch.

Torre had Proctor intentionally walk Manny Ramirez. But Proctor (0-3) then
walked Kevin Youkilis on four straight pitches.

"It was like he was trying to throw the ball through the wall," Torre said.

Lowell followed with a grounder to second for what should have been a double
play. But Robinson Cano made a wide feed to Jeter. The shortstop got his foot
on the bag but made a spinning throw that bounced.

Mientkiewicz could not come up with it as Lowell crashed into him. The game
was delayed as Mientkiewicz was taken off the field in a cart. Two runs
scored on the play as the ball bounced away.

Torre had Varitek walked. It worked as Proctor got Wily Mo Pena to ground to
short. But Jeter dropped the double-play ball for his 11th error of the
season.

Coco Crisp followed with an RBI single. Julio Lugo delivered a sacrifice fly
off Brian Bruney as Boston went up 10-6.

"It was an embarrassing inning," said Proctor, who has allowed six runs in 3
2/3 innings against Boston this season. "Today would have been a huge win for
us."

The Yankees wasted 12 hits, three by Melky Cabrera. Jorge Posada's three-run
homer in the fifth inning knocked Curt Schilling out of the game.

"It was like a football game," Boston manager Terry Francona said. "I think
everybody leaves the game just mentally and physically exhausted - the
coaches, the players, the umpires."

Nobody more so than the Yankees. Now all they can do is gain a game, a
whimper instead of a statement.

大多數人都認為洋基要有容乃大  別人可以做的  洋基不能做
看到洋基吃的虧都快比我吃的飯還多了…
唉………
