 DETROIT - Gary Sheffield often says contradictory things in the same
 sentence. So it was little surprise Friday when the Tigers' DH said the
 Yankees will miss his big righthanded bat minutes before saying he won't
 be shocked if his former team overtakes Boston in the AL East.

 "I feel like I fit into their lineup quite well," Sheffield said before
 the Tigers hosted the Mets. "I drove in 120-something runs every year that
 I was healthy. To say that's not needed there, that's a far stretch. I'm
 sure any team would want a guy that drives in 120 runs."

 Sheffield is thriving as the Tigers' No. 3 hitter - he is batting .270
 with 16 homers and 40 RBIs - after being acquired from the Yankees in the
 offseason for a package of prospects. Now the Yankees are worried that
 their batting order is too lefthanded.

 "They make the decisions," Sheffield said. "They have to live with them."

 But Sheffield still is a Yankees fan, he said.

 "I'm just like everybody," he said. "I turn on the TV and see what I see.
 They had a rough time at the beginning. They seem to be playing well,
 which I predicted they would."

 Asked if he thinks the Yankees will win the AL East, he said: "Don't put
 nothing past them. The guys that are still there are still talented."
