Igawa making adjustments

Get there early. Leave work 10 or 15 minutes before five o'clock, do
whatever's necessary and get to PNC Field or any of those other International

League baseball cathedrals and just watch.
Look for the guy who's not talking to anyone, wandering around the field in
what could easily be perceived as some sort of asocial pre-teen funk.

Get there early and watch him, milling around the warning track in
right-centerfield, indifferently chasing after batting-practice gappers,
trying to figure out American culture and the English language and the
whirlwind that has been his life during the last half year.

Then, and only then, will you have found Kei Igawa, a guy who's half a world
from home and a guy who's trying to turn a Triple-A stint in
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre into a springboard back into a major league career.

Igawa, whose rise and fall with the New York Yankees earlier this year was
well-documented in the media, is just now starting to settle down and realize
what it takes to be a big league pitcher in the United States.

"Japanese baseball and American baseball are very different," Igawa said
through interpreter Yumi Watanabe, 32, who has been with the Yankees
organization for the last five years. "The biggest difference is the thinking
in the way the game is played. I have to adjust."

Making that adjustment proved difficult in his first month as a Yankee.
Igawa, the latest player to join the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees roster,
pitched in six games (five of them starts) for the parent club in April and
early May, compiling a 7.63 ERA and a 2-1 record.

While the winning record may have been enough to keep him in the majors in
Kansas City or Tampa Bay, that wasn't the case in New York, where the media
had a field day questioning the heart and talent of the lefty that cost the
Yankees nearly $50 million.

After Igawa lasted just four innings and allowed eight runs on May 4 against
Seattle, New York optioned him to Class-A Tampa.

Igawa, who has been in the United States for all of seven months, said he
didn't take the demotion as an insult or a sign that the Yankees had given up
on him.

"This is the first time I've been in the United States," Igawa, 27, said. "It
was the first time I had been in the major leagues. And it's the first time
I've been in the minors. Everything is new to me. So it doesn't matter to me,
major league or minor league, I have to do my best."

Igawa's best is what the Yankees were planning on getting when they posted a
bid of more than $26 million to be paid to the Japanese league's Hanshin
Tigers for exclusive negotiating rights with the southpaw in late November.
From there, the Yankees and Igawa hammered out a five-year, $20 million deal.

In eight seasons for Hanshin, Igawa compiled an 86-60 record and a 3.15 ERA,
led the league in strikeouts on three occasions and was selected to the
All-Star team in 2001, 2002 and 2003.

His best year came in 2003, during which he went 20-5 with a 2.80 ERA and
took home the Sawamura Award, the Japanese equivalent of the Cy Young Award.
He was also named the league's most valuable player that season.

While in Tampa, Igawa turned things around nicely, allowing just two earned
runs in nine innings of work in two starts. Igawa was promoted to
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 29.

In two Triple-A starts, Igawa has been good, despite what the numbers and an
0-2 record indicate. In his debut, at home against Toledo, Igawa pitched
well, with the exception of one inning. Igawa allowed four runs in a shaky
fourth, but didn't surrender a run in any of the other four innings he
pitched. He also whiffed six.

In his second start, Igawa was even better, fanning nine in seven innings of
work and allowing just three runs. Unfortunately for Igawa, he received no
offensive support, as the Yankees were held hitless through five and
one-third innings and could muster only one run all game.

But while Igawa wants to get back to New York and prove that he's not the
$46-million bust that many people deemed him to be, he said he is feeling no
pressure.

"I'm learning day by day," he said. "Of course I want to contribute to the
team, but when I get promoted, I want to be in my best condition and I don't
want to rush myself."

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitching coach Dave Eiland said Igawa's progress thus
far has been encouraging and may land him back with New York in the near
future.

"His whole delivery is being reconstructed, and he's catching on pretty
quickly," said Eiland, who's in his first season as the Yankees' Triple-A
pitching coach. "He's come a long way already. I don't have a crystal ball,
but it may not take that long."

Along with the mechanics of pitching, making the switch to a five-man
pitching rotation has been difficult, Igawa said. Many teams in Japan use a
six- or seven-man rotation.

"I want to adjust to the four-day rest," he said. "It's very hard to adjust
to that. Once I get that, that feeling, then hopefully I can move up to the
majors."

Pitching concerns aside, Eiland said that there has been a period of
adjustment in getting used to communication on the mound with a player who
only just recently mastered "It's nice to meet you" in English.

"I've had some Latin players where there's a language barrier, but there is
"baseball language" that's kind of universal," Eiland said.

"But dealing with a Japanese player, obviously that's different. Talking with
(Yankees Minor League Pitching Coordinator Nardi) Contreras, there are things
in English he understands that relate to pitching. I was briefed beforehand
so if I made a mound visit, I knew exactly which road to take and what to say
to get my point across."

For Igawa, who's essentially isolated in every aspect of life, even in a
clubhouse with 22 teammates or in a ballpark with 10,000 fans, progress is
being made.

Perhaps even more importantly, he knows it's being made.

"I've learned a lot of new things being here," Igawa said. "I know that Major
League Baseball is the pinnacle of all baseball, and that's where I want to
be."
