Another dramatic night comes to a close

Good thing A-Rod homered when he did, it is pouring a Fenway Park.

Andy Pettitte had back spasms. He says he will make his next start (Friday
against the Pirates) and that the injury isn’t serious. We’ll see what
happens when he throws in the bullpen.

Jonathan Papelbon threw a great pitch to A-Rod, a 95-mph heater low and away.
”(Rodriguez) has that ability to hit that ball out like only maybe Manny,

Bobby Abreu, once a goat, made a huge play in the eighth. “Game-changing
play,” Francona said.

Joe Torre on Cano’s triple: “He killed that ball. The killed the ball into
the wind.”

As I was leaving the clubhouse to make deadline, I went to Cano and asked him
if he could hit a ball any harder. “You kidding me?” he said, eyes wide. “
No way.”

Boston’s PR staff does a great job on the postgame notes they give us. Among
the tidbits: A-Rod is hitting 7 of 15 with four homers and 11 RBI in the
ninth inning this season. … The Yankees had lost 10 straight games decided
by three or less runs before tonight.

Clemens possibly on Saturday

Roger Clemens was examined by a doctor today in Tampa and will have an MRI
tomorrow.

According to Joe Torre and Brian Cashman, the Rocket hopes to pitch on
Saturday against Yankee Stadium against the Pirates.

Matt DeSalvo will start at Chicago tomorrow if this game is played tonight,
which is no sure thing.

DeSalvo can be recalled because he will replacing a player on the disabled
list in Doug Mientkiewicz. On Tuesday, the Yankees will bring up a position
player from Scranton. It’s unclear who that will be.




Doug Mientkiewicz update

Mientkiewicz was released from Massachusetts General Hospital today and was
driven back to New York by his wife.

His biggest problem is his fratcured right wrist. The scaphoid bone is a slow
healer and Mientkiewicz will be out at least 6-8 weeks. He also has a
concussion and whiplash.

The Yankees believe Mientkiewicz will return this season.

Mientkiewicz received a lot of grief from fans. But starting May 1, he was
hitting .278 with 11 RBI. Don Mattingly said today that Mientkiewicz was the
best defensive first baseman the team has had in years.

Josh Phelps will get the spot for now. The Yankees are planning on having
Johnny Damon work at 1B with an eye on him perhaps playing there regularly.
But that won’t happen any time soon. As Mattingly said, “You can’t give
him steak at first, you have to give him baby formula.”
