Pettitte Says He Quit on Himself

Sometimes, you watch a game and go talk to the pitcher, and you can’t
believe he’s describing what you just saw. Esteban Loaiza was like that; he
would give up 6 runs in 5 innings and talk about how he actually pitched
pretty well.

Andy Pettitte is not like that. Pettitte is about as honest as I could
imagine a pitcher being, especially after losses. Pettitte hates to let
people down, and when he loses — even when he pitches well, as he did for
most of tonight’s 6-1 loss to Colorado — I suspect he uses his post-game
interview as a kind of therapy, berating himself for mistakes that cost his
team a game.

The Yankees have not been generous to Pettitte this year. He has a 3.28
e.r.a. but a 4-5 record, and in four of the losses, the Yankees have scored
two runs or fewer. Jeff Francis was terrific tonight against him, but
Pettitte dismissed that excuse.

Pettitte didn’t. He got a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, and then walked
Francis to start the bottom of the inning. “That was unacceptable,”
 Pettitte said. “Can’t throw a strike to the pitcher.”

But what bothered Pettitte most is what happened after Matt Holliday’s
two-run homer later that inning. Holliday had crushed a changeup 442 feet to
give the Rockies a 2-1 lead, and the pitch had acted like a cutter but
without the cutter’s usual speed: it turned into Holliday instead of away
from him, begging to be whacked.

From that point, Pettitte lost confidence and simply stopped throwing the
changeup. The Rockies blitzed him for four runs in the seventh, and Pettitte
made a rare admission, saying that he quit on himself.

“To tell you the truth, I don’t really know what happened,” Pettitte said.
“I haven’t done that in a long time. I quit pitching. I didn’t use both
sides of the plate like I was doing the whole game, and kind of got real
one-dimensional, trying to throw my heater and my cutter in on almost every
pitch. Man, you can’t let that happen, and I did, and it cost us in a big
way tonight.”

Roger Clemens starts on Thursday afternoon to try to avoid a sweep.
Joe Torre said after the game that Johnny Damon would start in center field
on Thursday. Torre wants Damon to play against Rockies starter Rodrigo Lopez,
because Damon is a career .313 hitter off him. The Yankees are still
considering whether to put Damon on the disabled list because of his sore
ribcage, Torre said.

Roger Clemens星期四會先發來避免球隊被落磯對橫掃.  Joe Torre賽後說會讓Damon
星期四在中外野先發. Torre想要Damon對落磯對先發投手Rodrigo Lopez先發, 因為Damon
對他的生涯打擊率有.313.  Torre說:洋基還是考慮讓Damon進入DL.
