STRIKE THREE: Johnny Damon swings and misses a pitch to strike out in the
ninth inning of the Rockies' 3-1 victory over the Yankees last night in
Denver.June 20, 2007 -- DENVER - Two swings in the indoor batting cage at
Coors Field yesterday told Johnny Damon all he needed to know about his
abdominal muscle problem that had been listed as a strain but is a lot worse.

"My rib is shot," Damon told The Post. "I am not too happy right now."

Asked if he was looking at the first disabled-list stint of his career, Damon
said, "I don't know."

Damon already knew Joe Torre was going to use Melky Cabrera in center field
against the Rockies last night. While he admitted the abdominal problem was
there, Damon also recognized the Yankees started winning when he was shifted
to the DH role and Cabrera inserted in center.

Starting last night and continuing through Sunday the Yankees will play six
games without the DH.

Torre used Damon to replace Andy Phillips at first base in the seventh inning
which double-switched Phillips out of the game. Damon batted twice. He flied
out to center leading off the eighth and fanned to end the game in the ninth
with Hideki Matsui on third.

"Johnny is under the weather right now, his side is bothering him," Torre
said before last night's 3-1 loss to the Rockies. "He took BP in the cage and
he feels it. We are not going to push it. Right now I would rather have him
for one [pinch hit] at-bat than lose him [completely]."

Since Torre is comfortable with Cabrera in center and has Kevin Thompson to
help, he wasn't overly disappointed. In fact, Torre was hoping to have Damon
just for tomorrow's game.

"The only day I wanted to play him was Thursday because his numbers against
[Rodrigo] Lopez are good," Torre said of the Rockies starter. Against him,
Damon is batting .313 (20-for-64) with four homers and 12 RBIs.

Damon initially suffered the injury last Tuesday in the Yankee Stadium
batting cages. Torre played him Tuesday and Wednesday, gave him a day off
Thursday and didn't play him Friday because of the abdominal problem. Damon
returned Saturday against the Mets and went 1-for-4. He was 2-for-5 with a
two-run homer Sunday in the final Subway Series game.

Asked about the home run being someplace to start, Damon wasn't sure.

"With a rib cage, every swing hurts," said Damon, who is hitting a
disappointing .255 overall and .245 with runners in scoring position.
