Andy Pettitte, LHP (4-5, 3.28) @ Jeremy Guthrie, RHP (4-1, 2.42)
Yankees (36-37) Orioles (32-43)
Scouting Report:
Yankees: Pettitte will have an extra day of rest to kick himself after he,
in his words, "quit pitching" in an effort against the Rockies at Coors Field.
His confidence hurt by a Matt Holliday home run on a changeup that cut back
over the plate, Pettitte decided to rear back and try to fire his fastball
and cutter by the Rockies' hitters.
They weren't buying, as they battered him for four more runs in the seventh
inning. The first five innings of Pettitte's effort were quite good, though;
before Holliday's sixth-inning homer, he'd allowed just two singles.
Orioles: Guthrie has gone from curiosity to potential All-Star in a span of
10 starts. The former first-round pick has allowed two earned runs or less in
nine of his 10 starts, and he's pitched into the seventh inning or deeper
seven straight times. Guthrie ranks second in the American League in ERA and
could be a serious contender for the Rookie of the Year Award. All of that
comes as quite a surprise for the right-hander, who was acquired on a waiver
claim from Cleveland early last winter.
Wednesday, June 27 Oriole Park at Camden Yards | 7:05 PM ET
Roger Clemens, RHP (1-2, 5.09) @ Erik Bedard, LHP (5-4, 3.60)
Yankees (36-37) Orioles (32-43)
Scouting Report:
Yankees: Clemens turned in the shortest outing of his three starts this season
against the Rockies in Denver, lasting just 4 1/3 innings and struggling to
catch his breath under the mile-high altitudes.
Clemens didn't help his case by stroking a single up the middle, forcing him to
run the bases an inning before he gave up a lead in a tied game.
While The Rocket's fastball is no longer the dominant gasser he once featured,
Clemens still showcases his splitter and forces batters to chase. He has struck
out 21 in 16 2/3 innings and will try again for career victory No. 350.
Orioles: Bedard is scheduled to make this start and seems likely to do so,
but he has a sore left hamstring that could force him to take some extra rest.
The southpaw came through his side session without any pain, but the Orioles
want to make sure he's healthy before they send him back to the mound.
Bedard, who leads the Major Leagues in strikeouts (121), hasn't missed a start
this year. If he gets pushed back, the O's would likely turn to Daniel Cabrera
a day ahead of schedule.
Thursday, June 28 Oriole Park at Camden Yards | 7:05 PM ET
Chien-Ming Wang, RHP (7-4, 3.51) @ Daniel Cabrera, RHP (6-8, 4.98)
Yankees (36-37) Orioles (32-43)
Scouting Report:
Yankees: Wang wasn't especially sharp in his effort against the Giants on
Saturday, a start he had looked forward to due to the large Taiwanese
population in San Francisco.
Maybe it was nerves, or maybe a little extra rest impeded his performance.
Either way, Wang let a three-run lead get away and eventually took a
no-decision in a game that went to the 13th inning.
He will be seeing the Orioles for the first time this season.
Orioles: Cabrera threw five no-hit innings in his last start and settled for
six innings of two-hit baseball. The hulking right-hander is more under
control this year than last, but he still leads the American League in walks
(49).
His teammate Steve Trachsel is only three walks behind him. Cabrera is also
second in hit batsmen (eight) and losses, and only four AL pitchers have
allowed more home runs (14).
If Erik Bedard can't make his next start,Cabrera would pitch one day earlier
than this.
