Talkin' Baseball With the Yankees
與洋基球員談棒球

Alex Rodriguez is at his best when he's stripped away from the politics
of being A-Rod and he just talks about baseball. There are few players 
I've ever covered who can get as in-depth on the game when they want to.

Alex Rodriguez 如果去除他 A-Rod 的官腔官調而只談論棒球時，那是他狀況最好

A bunch of writers were sitting on the bench before batting practice, 
waiting for Joe Torre to arrive for the pre-game interview. Rodriguez
and Mariano Rivera were sitting next to us, having an animated chat with
Johnny Damon about what it felt like to face Rivera.

一群記者在打擊練習前坐在板凳上等待Joe Torre的賽前訪談。Rodriguez 和 
Mariano Rivera 坐在我們身旁，他們兩個正在跟Johnny Damon有一段生動的
對話，對話內容是有關對上Rivera的感覺。

Damon talked about how helpless he felt, how he would move up in the box
or open his stance or make all manner of other adjustments in a futile 
effort to hit Rivera. They talked about bunting against Rivera, and Damon
said he shuddered at the thought of getting his hands that close to Rivera's
cutter. (Damon was 5 for 28 against Rivera, all singles.)

Damon 說對上 Rivera 他是一點辦法也沒有，他會在打擊區上往前站，或前腳站
比較開一點，或是採取其他調整姿勢，極盡努力來從Rivera手上打出安打。他們
提到要對Rivera採取觸擊的方式，而Damon則說只要想到他的手會那麼靠近Rivera
的切球，就讓他感到惶誠惶恐。(Damon對上Rivera的成績是 28 個打數 5 支安打，
全部都是一壘安打。)

Then they started tossing around names of pitchers to bunt on, or not to
bunt on, mostly retired guys. Damon brought up the left-hander Jim Abbott,
who succeeded for the Angels, Yankees and White Sox despite having no right
hand. (Damon said it would have been unsportsmanlike to bunt on Abbott.)
Rivera recalled Abbott taking batting practice for the Yankees, swatting
home runs into the bleachers, and one of them talked about how Abbott
could switch his glove so quickly that he could snare even the hardest
line drives back to the box.

接著他們開始提到一些投手的名字，談論到底要不要對他們採取觸擊方式，大部分
都是一些退休的球員。Damon有提到左投手Jim Abbott，這位球員在天使隊、洋基隊
跟白襪隊時的成績都不錯──即使他沒有右手。(Damon說對上Abbott如果採取觸擊
方式有失運動家的風度。) Rivera則回想到Abbott在洋基時的打擊練習情形，他曾經
把球打成飛往看台的全壘打。其中有人說Abbott投完球左手套回手套的速度其快無比，
甚至可以馬上攔截超級強勁的平飛球然後傳回本壘。

Those are the kind of moments you cherish as a writer, getting to sit in
on a talk between three stars with about 40 years of combined major league
experience, chatting easily about their peers and their craft.

這些時刻是你慶幸你是身為作家的時刻，能夠坐著聽這三位大聯盟資歷加起來超過
40 年的明星球員談話，聽他們輕鬆地談論他們的同輩球員與他們的這項職業。

I've been asked a lot lately about the media's intrusion on players'
private lives, and how the rules have all changed since this tabloid
stuff about A-Rod's marriage. Really, when you're around the players
in the clubhouse and the field, it hasn't changed at all. It's baseball,
their profession and their passion, and that's what we're here to cover.

我最近常常被問到有關媒體侵犯球員私生活的問題，以及隨著小報們刊登有關
A-Rod婚姻生活之後是否大家已經都改變了原本的規範。然而，說實在的，當你
跟著這些球員採訪，看著他們在球員休息室以及在場上的情形，你會發現一切
還是沒變。這還是棒球，是他們的職業，也是他們的熱情所在，而這些才是我們
在這裡需要報導的。
