http://0rz.tw/9c2Jo (THE JOURNAL NEWS) Pettitte continues his solid pitching By KEVIN DEVANEY JR. THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: June 15, 2007) NEW YORK - What might be just as important as the quality of the starts the Yankees got in their three-game series sweep of Arizona is how long each of them lasted. Andy Pettitte yesterday followed the lead of Chien-Ming Wang and Mike Mussina, providing another lengthy outing to help an overused Yankee bullpen. Pettitte matched a personal season high, going eight innings in a 7-1 win over the Diamondbacks at the Stadium, allowing just one run on four hits. "It's a benefit for everybody," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "We went through a streak there where we had to get every (reliever) up every day. Something like that's going to take its toll. Wang allowed a run in seven innings on Tuesday, with Mussina following up with two runs in 7 2/3 innings on Wednesday. The Yankees, winners of nine straight and 12 of 14, have come to expect nothing less from Pettitte. The reliable left-hander, who turns 35 today, has gone at least seven innings in seven of his last eight starts. Pettitte (4-4) has had little to show for it, though. Yesterday was just his first win in four starts. The Yankees have given him very little run support all season, which is evidenced by his .500 record and 2.93 ERA. "Andy is unbelievable," said Alex Rodriguez, who went 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored as the designated hitter. "Just the way he goes about his business, and he threw the ball very well. We finally gave him some runs to work with." Pettitte was efficient from the start. He walked only one - he's walked only one in each of his last seven starts - and retired 16 of 17 at one point. "I wasn't in a whole lot of trouble," Pettitte said. "When you've got guys on second and third, you're trying to get strikeouts. so this was definitely a nice game to be able to throw 100 pitches and not have too many problems over the course of the game." During the nine-game winning streak, the Yankees have needed their bullpen - which struggled for most of the season - for only 21 2/3 innings. The relief pitchers have given up just four runs in that span. Mientkiewicz's misery: Doug Mientkiewicz showed up at the Stadium yesterday, two days after undergoing surgery to insert a screw in his fractured right wrist. Mientkiewicz said the pain has been excruciating. "I'm absolutely miserable," he said. "This thing hurts." One positive was that Mientkiewicz, who broke his wrist and suffered a concussion in a collision with Mike Lowell in Boston two weeks ago, expects to start hitting in four weeks. August remains the earliest he'll likely return, although he hopes to be back sooner. "I've always been a fast healer," Mientkiewicz said. "But I've never broken a bone before, so you never know." Giambi update: Lawyers for the players union and the commissioner's office are still discussing ways to bring about a meeting between Jason Giambi and steroids investigator George Mitchell. The talks were expected to extend into the weekend and possibly next week, a person familiar with negotiations told The Associated Press. Extra bases: Bobby Abreu singled in the first to extend his hitting streak to a season-best 13 games. He's 22 for 50 this month with 12 RBI. ... Rodriguez started at DH for the first time this season and for only the 10th time in his career. He apparently forgot in the first inning when, after he was stranded on the bases, he momentarily waited for his glove to be brought out to him at third base. ... Miguel Cairo, who's become the everyday first baseman with Mientkiewicz out, started at third yesterday. He was charged with his first error of the year in the eighth when Josh Phelps couldn't scoop a low throw at first. --- =.= -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 125.232.151.177
