Clippard's plea: I'll take the fifth
Despite rocky outing, rookie remains in rotation

NEW YORK -- A half-hour after the Yankees' 13-6 victory over the Pirates
yesterday, rookie right-hander Tyler Clippard stood near his locker,
explaining how things could have gone differently in his fifth start of the
season.

"In a big situation where I needed an out, I didn't get it today," the
22-year-old said.

The inning he was referring to was the fourth.

With the bases loaded, he gave up a double to Chris Duffy that plated two
runs and two pitches later, Jose Bautista's single to left added two more.
The Pirates had quickly erased a 5-2 deficit and Sean Henn was summoned from
the bullpen to replace Clippard.

In just 3 2/3 innings, Clippard allowed six earned runs, nearly as many as he
had yielded in his first four starts (eight). Yankees manager Joe Torre said,
however, that Clippard didn't pitch as poorly as those statistics suggest and
would still start Saturday against the Mets.

"He was throwing some pitches that weren't too far off," Torre said. "He got
his pitch count up in a hurry, and the more they saw of him, it was a little
bit of an advantage. I didn't think he was as bad as the numbers today, I
really didn't."

Clippard, who threw 90 pitches, said he was working on keeping his pitches
down in the zone and thought he did a reasonably good job, especially with
his fastball.

In the second inning, though, he threw a changeup to Ryan Doumit that was up
in the zone, and Doumit stroked a double. Then he threw an 0-2 pitch to Jose
Castillo that was down in the zone, but wasn't a "good 0-2 pitch" and
Castillo singled in two runs.

"It's just a matter of consistency and trying to make adjustments during the
course of the game," Pettitte said of Clippard. "The only way to learn from
it is to go out there and do it, have those experiences. The only problem is
it's hard to do it here because it's in New York and everything is
magnified."

With the return of Roger Clemens, Torre indicated the pitching staff has been
stabilized: Clippard will remain the fifth starter along with ace Chien-Ming
Wang and veterans Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte.

The Yankees have an off-day today, and Wang will start tomorrow against
Arizona, followed by Mussina and Pettitte. The current plan, Torre said, is
to have Clemens open the "Subway Series" against the Mets Friday and start
Clippard Saturday.

Clippard's spot is safe for now, despite the recent success in Triple-A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre of demoted left-hander Kei Igawa, who was optioned to
Class-A Tampa on May 7 after inconsistent performances.

Igawa fanned eight and allowed just one earned run for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
Friday night. But Torre said Igawa is still working on "perfecting his
pitches" and is not an option at this time.

Still, the young Clippard knows remaining in the rotation is not a sure thing
with the Yankees fighting for a playoff spot. Torre said before the game that
with four veterans ahead of him, Clippard will not be asked to carry the
load. He does, though, have to perform well enough to retain his spot.

"I know that every start's big for me," Clippard said. "I know that I have to
prove myself every start. That's not something I avoid, I try to embrace it.
Today was a little different story. I'm just glad I'm in the rotation."
