A-Rod might sit out All-Star Game to rest strained hamstring

NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez will decide by Saturday whether his strained left
hamstring will keep him out of the All-Star Game. But the immediate concern
is whether he'll play again this week.

"I'm going to try and play as many (games) as I can," he said yesterday after
the Minnesota Twins beat the Yankees 6-2.

Rodriguez was injured on Monday night but started the next day. He was used
as the designated hitter yesterday and went 0 for 4. He said the injury has
stayed about the same.

"I'm going to have to sit down with Joe (Torre) and evaluate what we want to
do coming into the break," he said. "We want to be smart and have some
precaution with it."

Rodriguez gave conflicting answers, saying a stint on the disabled list was
not under consideration, but that his injury wouldn't heal as long as he
continued to play.

Rodriguez said he would go to San Francisco for the All-Star Game regardless
of his status.

Torre said the decision whether to play for the American League would be
Rodriguez's to make.

"That's his call. I think if he gets to the All-Star break and he feels that
playing is more of a benefit and if we feel the same way, we'll talk to him,"
Torre said.

Perhaps Rodriguez could use the rest. He is hitless in his last 19 at-bats -
his longest drought of the year - and hasn't hit a home run since June 23.

Strategy foiled: The Yankees had a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning when
Minnesota put a runner on third with one out.

Torre played the infield back, and Michael Cuddyer drove in the run with a
grounder to second.

Torre said he was worried about a big inning with Justin Morneau on deck.
Morneau had doubled and singled in his first two at-bats against Mike Mussina.

"I'm pulling for a tie in the eighth or ninth inning at that point in time.
That's fine with me," Torre said. "That's not something I wanted to do where
they are in the lineup."

Morneau grounded out when he came up with the bases empty.

Catcher needed: Wil Nieves was chosen as the backup catcher because of his
defense. Now that isn't much of a strength.

Opposing teams have stolen 11 straight bases against Nieves. He has caught
only five of 17 base stealers this season.

"He's rushing himself," Torre sad. "He has a strong arm, but he doesn't have
the good timing right now."

Nieves was 0 for 2 at the plate yesterday and is hitless in his last 13
at-bats. He is at .120 for the season with four RBI and no extra-base hits in
50 at-bats.

On the mend: Frank Torre, the manager's older brother and a former
big-leaguer, was at the Stadium for the first time since undergoing a kidney
transplant on May 1.

He visited the clubhouse in the morning but did not stay for the game.

"He looks pretty good," Joe Torre said. "He gets tired quickly, obviously.
But they're going to let him go home to Florida by the end of the month."

Around the horn: Torre called George Steinbrenner before the game to wish him
a happy 77th birthday. ...

Chien-Ming Wang was termed "Mr. Wang-erful" on the back page of the New York
Post yesterday after pitching seven shutout innings on Tuesday night.
"Wonderful? You walked four guys," pitching coach Ron Guidry said to the
right-hander. "Wonderful?" As Wang laughed, Guidry threw the paper in the
trash. ...

First baseman Doug Mientkiewicz is headed to Tampa on Monday to continue his
comeback from wrist surgery. He hopes to play in rehab games within three
weeks. ...

Are the Yankees even trying? They played recorded versions of the national
anthem and God Bless America on the Fourth of July. Has New York run short of
singers?
