Bombers' bats begin to boom
Cano's two-run blast helps Wang notch 8th

On a night Alex Rodriguez could not be expected to carry the Yankees, the
unexpected took place. It came in the form of Robinson Cano, Bobby Abreu
and Hideki Matsui, a trio the Bombers have been waiting to get going all
season. If last night's game is any indication, that wait might be over.
Cano homered, while Abreu and Matsui combined for five hits in the Yankees'
8-0 win over the Twins. Three different Yankees drove in a pair of runs
as the Bombers won their second in a row.
"Sometimes things are contagious," said Derek Jeter, who went 3-for-5
with two RBI. "Seems like a couple guys start swinging the bats and
everybody starts swinging the bats. I hope it can last the rest of home
stand."
Rodriguez was in the lineup just one day after injuring his left hamstring,
but his 0-for-4 night didn't stop the Yankees from posting their most
prolific night (in a game that was completed, anyway) since June 17.
"You can't rely on one person all the time; not only is it unfair to that
one person, but he's not going to be able to do it every day," Joe Torre
said. "The key to having a good ballclub is being able to share the wealth."
Chien-Ming Wang (8-4) was the beneficiary of the run support, picking up
his eighth victory of the season, his first in three starts. Wang allowed
four hits over seven scoreless innings, but his control was spotty,
resulting in four walks.
The pitching star of the night was 26-year-old rookie reliever Edwar Ramirez,
who struck out the side in the ninth in his big-league debut.
"We wanted to get him into a stress-free situation," Torre said. "He came
in and threw strikes. I'm sure it's going to be memorable for him."
The Yankees (39-41) improved to 4-1 this season against the Twins and
moved to within 7-1/2 games of the Tigers in the wild-card race. The Yanks
and Twins have two more games at the Stadium this week, including today's
matinee matchup between Mike Mussina and Johan Santana.
The Yankees staked Wang to a quick lead, scoring a run in the first on a pair
of singles and Jeter's run-scoring groundout. Wang took the lead and ran
with it, allowing just one baserunner through the first three innings.
Wang walked three batters in the fourth in a one-run game, but the Yankees
gave their starter some breathing room in the bottom of the inning. Abreu
beat out an infield single, setting up Cano's two-run homer, his fourth
of the season.
"It just gives you an indication when a couple of guys start hitting, it
starts relieving some of the tension," Torre said. "Guys start being
themselves."
Cano contributed in the field as well, starting a rare 4-3-6 double play
to erase Jason Kubel following his leadoff single in the fifth. Wang put
two on with a single and a walk in the sixth, but came back to strike out
Michael Cuddyer and get Justin Morneau to ground out to second, stranding
two Twins.
"He really made the pitches when we needed him to," Jorge Posada said.
"He does good things even when he's not well, because his sinker is so
effective."
The Yankees blew it open with five runs in the sixth.
Posada started it with a single - but he made it all the way to third on
a rare error by Torii Hunter in center - then scored on a wild pitch by
starter Carlos Silva (6-9). Matsui followed with a double, and then scored
on Abreu's single to right. Melky Cabrera added a two-run single and
Jeter capped the inning with an RBI single, giving the Yankees an 8-0
lead.
"It's a lot different right now; we're scoring a lot of runs like we're
supposed to," Abreu said. "There's action in every inning because we always
have someone on base."
Abreu, who hit an upper deck shot to right Monday night, has played a major
role in the turnaround, collecting six hits over the past two games.
Scott Proctor and Ramirez closed out the game, with the rookie's debut
putting an exclamation point on the victory.
"Everybody's contribution was important," Torre said. "It really makes a
huge difference for us."
