Lefty charged with eight runs as A's leave with series victory

NEW YORK -- The A's scored seven runs in the second inning to knock
Andy Pettitte out of the game early on Sunday in the Yankees' 11-5 loss at
Yankee Stadium.

Jack Cust and Dan Johnson homered in the A's 16-hit afternoon,
sending a jolt to Pettitte's ERA, which jumped from 3.24 to 3.77.
The left-hander walked one and didn't strike out a batter.

Pettitte, who was charged with eight runs (seven earned),
hadn't been yanked from a game that early since 2003,
when he exited his start against the Cubs after 1 2/3 innings.

Bobby Abreu and Andy Phillips had two RBIs apiece, and Derek Jeter plated
another run to cut the A's lead to 8-5 after six innings,
but it wasn't enough.
