Two Final Pitches Leave Mussina Taking the Blame
最後兩球讓Mussina承擔一切指責

Mike Mussina has pitched long enough to know the nuances of each loss, and he
usually shows his feelings. He reacts differently depending on what happened,
whether the umpire squeezed him, or his teammates let him down, or the other
team simply hammered him.

Yesterday’s loss to the Minnesota Twins was the kind that stings the most,
because Mussina deserved better. The umpire never called a ball four. His
teammates gave him a lead against Johan Santana. And the Twins did not hit
Mussina very well.

What they did do was take good swings on his final two pitches, and the
resulting double and home run broke a tie and sent the Yankees to a 6-2
defeat. It subdued Mussina, who had arrived in the morning at Yankee Stadium
wearing a bright red Captain America T-shirt for Independence Day.

“I just let two pitches ruin my day,” Mussina said, before correcting
himself. “Ruin our day. I don’t know how things would have turned out, but

And so July 4 at Yankee Stadium, which has featured memories like Lou Gehrig’
s farewell speech and Dave Righetti’s no-hitter, became just another numbing
loss in a season full of them. The Yankees (39-42) went down in order in each
of the last five innings.

Jason Kubel hit the go-ahead homer, which followed a double by Torii Hunter
and broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh. Hunter slammed his double to the warning
track in center off a pitch similar to the one he hit for a flyout three
innings before. Mussina had thrown 92 pitches before Kubel batted, but
Yankees Manager Joe Torre let him continue.

Kubel decided it by lining the first pitch a few feet inside the right-field
foul pole for his sixth home run. It was a classic short-porch home run, and
it was not at all what Mussina expected.

“Really, in the back of my head, I thought he was going to bunt,” Mussina
said. “So I was trying to throw a strike and get to the line, and the ball

“I was just trying to pull the ball anyway, so I got a pitch inside to do it
with,” Kubel said. “I didn’t hit it that great. I knew it was at least
going to get him over. I’m happy with how it all turned out.”

The Twins turned the 4-2 lead over to Santana and their stingy bullpen, which
ranks second in earned run average in the American League. Santana (10-6)
allowed four hits in seven innings, and Pat Neshek and Joe Nathan each tossed
a perfect inning.

“When you have to face a team like the Yankees, you know it’s going to be a
challenge,” Santana said. “But I’m always ready for the challenge,
whatever the situation and whoever I have to face. That’s the way I am.
Whatever it is, I bring my ‘A’ game.”

Santana, a two-time Cy Young award winner, was being kind about the
challenge. He has throttled left-handed hitters this season (.144 opponents’
 average), so Torre benched Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu and the switch-hitting
Jorge Posada, who normally does not catch Mussina.

The Twins scored an unearned run in the first inning, taking advantage of an
error by Derek Jeter, but Hideki Matsui tied the score with a home run in the
second. Jeter doubled and scored in the fourth, but Santana pitched carefully
to the bottom of the order, walking Kevin Thompson to face the light-hitting
Wil Nieves with the bases loaded.

Nieves, who is 6 for 50 this season, popped the first pitch to right to end
the inning. The Yankees never had another base runner.

They did have a lead, 2-1, but it disappeared in typical Twins style. Jason
Bartlett led off the sixth with a bloop single and stole second. Two
groundouts to second brought him around to tie the score, setting up Mussina
for the worst kind of loss.

Alex Rodriguez, who is 0 for 19 in his past five games, started at designated
hitter to rest his strained left hamstring and said he did not know if he
would play in the All-Star Game on Tuesday. Rodriguez, who was the leading
vote-getter, said he would go to San Francisco for the game but would decide
this weekend if he would play. “If I feel like this, probably not,” said
Rodriguez, who will meet with Joe Torre today and may opt to take his first
day off this season. “When you play through it, it’s not really going to
improve,” he said. “That’s something we have to discuss as a team.” ...
The pitching coach Ron Guidry said he would be the starter in the Old-Timers’
 Game on Saturday. “I will be on a pitch count — stringent,” Guidry said.
...Torre’s brother, Frank, who had a kidney transplant in May, was at the
ballpark before the game.

A-Rod說他不知道明星賽會不會上場. 他這週末會做決定.
A-rod今天會與Torre見面, 可能會本季以來會第一場缺席比賽.

Guidry將會在星期六的Old-Timers’Game先發.

Torre五月接受腎臟移植的哥哥今天賽前有來球場.
