Posada can't mask feelings
Catcher accuses teammates of going 'through the motions'
BY MARK FEINSAND
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER (Sunday, July 1st 2007, 9:49 AM)
Johnny Damon called it bad luck. Derek Jeter credited the opposing pitcher.
Joe Torre thinks the Yankees need to get their confidence back.
Jorge Posada had a different take on the Yankees' 7-0, one-hit loss to the
A's at Yankee Stadium yesterday.
"I'm not talking about unlucky; luck comes when you go after it," the Yankee
catcher said. "And it seems like at times we just go through the motions and
today was one of those cases.
"That's the way it is, I think everybody knows what I'm talking about."
Damon's sixth-inning single off Chad Gaudin was all that stood between a
terrible loss and history, as Gaudin (seven innings) and Rich Harden combined
on the one-hitter.
Is this the first crack in the armor for a team that has been to the
postseason every year since 1995? The brutal loss dropped the Yankees to
37-40, leaving them miles away from both the American League East and
wild-card leaders.
Just 17 days ago, the Yankees stood 7-1/2 games behind the Red Sox in the AL
East, having rattled off 14 victories in 16 games. But after going 1-7 on
their road trip and splitting the first two games with a struggling A's team,
the Yankees trail the East-leading Red Sox by 11 games and the Tigers by
eight games for the wild card.
"It's very disappointing, especially since we cut into the deficit," Damon
said. "We were hearing a lot of talk that, 'Here come the Yankees.' Then we
went on the road trip and things went south. We have to find a way through it
or else lots can happen."
What could happen if the Yankees keep losing? Brian Cashman said the other
day that nobody's job was safe, so the GM and Torre could be fighting to
remain employed. Now that it's July, the trade market will start heating up
soon. Could the Yankees be sellers for the first time since the early '90s?
Anything is possible.
Yesterday's embarrassment didn't help do much to sustain the mood in the
clubhouse, which was very good following Mike Mussina's 2-1 win over Oakland
on Friday night.
Not including Thursday's suspended game in Baltimore, the Bombers - who may
have to forfeit that nickname soon - have scored a total of six runs in their
last five games, losing four of them. After scoring two runs in the first
inning Friday night, the Yanks have gone scoreless in their last 16 innings.
"We're obviously not hitting up to our ability right now," Torre said.
"They're working hard; nobody is sitting back, waiting for something to
happen magically. It's just something we're going through that we have to
turn around quickly, because there are games coming off the schedule here
that we can't get back."
It was the fifth time the Bombers have been blanked this season, and the
first time in almost three years that they were shut out twice in the same
week.
"It's contagious; bad hitting, good hitting," Jeter said. "When we had our
streak when we were playing well, it seemed like everybody swung the bats
good. When you're scuffling, it seems like everybody is scuffling. That's
just the way it goes."
Torre didn't see a lack of effort from his struggling team, and while he
didn't fault his hitters' approach, he didn't think they gave Gaudin a hard
enough time.
"I don't think anybody was phoning it in," Torre said. "We've just got to
find that ability to put pressure on pitchers. We haven't been able to do
that on a regular basis."
Kei Igawa (2-2), making his second start since returning from the minors, was
hit for four runs - all coming on three home runs - in 6-1/3 innings. The
bullpen didn't do much to keep the Yankees in the game, as Scott Proctor and
Mike Myers combined to allow three runs in the seventh, putting the game well
out of reach.
Igawa, who after retiring the first eight A's hitters allowed back-to-back
homers by Jason Kendall and Shannon Stewart in the third, served up his third
homer of the afternoon in the sixth, a two-run upper deck shot by Dan
Johnson. The rookie lefthander has allowed a team-high 11homers in 41-2/3
innings.
Gaudin (7-3) didn't need anything beyond Kendall's homer, as he worked his
way through the Yankees' lineup with ease. The Yankees' only two baserunners
through the first five innings reached on walks.
At 4-0, the game felt like a laugher, and the only remaining drama was how
long Gaudin's no-hitter would last. Damon ended the bid with a one-out single
in the sixth, grounding a ball up the middle.
"I didn't think it would be the only hit we got," Damon said. "It turned out
to be."
One out later, Gaudin (7-3) walked Bobby Abreu, bringing Alex Rodriguez to
the plate. A home run would have brought the Yankees within one run and
injected life into the Stadium crowd, but Gaudin struck out A-Rod swinging on
a 3-2 pitch, essentially finishing the Yankees.
"You have to give him credit, but unfortunately, we were easy for him," Torre
said of Gaudin. "That shouldn't be. He pitched an outstanding game, but we're
capable of doing better things than we did today, offensively."
