Hughes Eyes Return to Yankees

Phil Hughes stood before a locker yesterday in a Yankees clubhouse, back in
New York for the first time since May.

But he was not in the Bronx. Hughes was at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at
St. George in Staten Island, home of the Yankees’ short-season Class A
affiliate.

但他不是在Bronx, 而是在 Staten Island.

Hughes, the Yankees’ top pitching prospect, who injured his hamstring May 1
in his second major league start and sustained an ankle injury during his
rehabilitation, pitched from the bullpen mound next to left field yesterday
afternoon.

“It’s not the same New York, but it’s encouraging,” Hughes said after his
workout. “I’m a little bit closer right now.”

Billy Connors, a Tampa, Fla.-based Yankees executive who often works with
pitchers, said yesterday in Staten Island that he has been helping Hughes and
pitcher Jeff Karstens, who broke his leg against the Red Sox in April.

Connors說他一直在幫助Hughes和Karstens復健.

Hughes, Connors and Karstens traveled together Tuesday to New York from the
Yankees’ training facility in Tampa. They will go to Trenton this evening
after Karstens pitches for Staten Island during the day.

Hughes is scheduled to pitch tomorrow in Trenton for the Yankees’ Class AA
affiliate, then again for Trenton next week. Karstens is also scheduled to
pitch in Trenton.

Connors said Hughes would pitch three innings, or about 45 pitches, tomorrow,
then throw 60 pitches in his next start for Trenton.

“His arm strength is there; he’s just got to get out on the mound and get a
feel for himself out there,” Connors said, adding that Hughes is no longer
having problems with his hamstring or ankle.

Hughes pitched two innings Monday for Tampa, another Yankees’ Class A team,
returning to the mound for a game for the first time since he had to leave in
the seventh inning of a no-hitter against the Texas Rangers on May 1 after
the hamstring injury. The no-hit bid was lost the next inning.

Hughes星期一為洋基1A球隊Tampa投了兩局.

“You don’t really think about it too much,” Hughes said yesterday of his
injuries. “You keep pretty focused, because you don’t really have anything
to do except concentrating on getting better. It’s frustrating sometimes
because you’re out for so long, and you just want to be playing somewhere.”

Hughes said he has not had much contact with the Yankees players, nor has he
been able to watch many games. But he does know their record, which is now an
unseemly 42-43, 10 games behind the American League East-leading Red Sox.

At the All-Star Game in San Francisco, catcher Jorge Posada said, “He’s got
too valuable an arm. The first thing they want to be sure about is that he’s
healthy. If we can have him for the second half, that would be good.”

The Yankees begin the second half of their season tonight against the Devil
Rays, kicking off almost a month of games against teams with records under
.500. If the Yankees are going to make a move, now would presumably be the
time. At some point, Hughes could be part of that push, perhaps replacing Kei
Igawa, who has struggled in his first season in New York, with a 7.14 earned
run average after eight starts.

洋基的下半季將從今晚開始, 面對坦帕灣魔鬼魚隊.

Hughes said that had he not injured his ankle, he could have been back with
the Yankees three weeks ago. But ideally, he said, he would like three or
four more starts in the minors.

“It has been a weird year,” Hughes said. “You start off in Triple A, and
then you get hurt and now I’m making my way back through.

“It’s a year that has been frustrating up to this point, but hopefully I
can make something of it in the second half.”
